On-Line Newsletter of the UP Horticultural Society Alumni Association Version 2001.1 (February) Written by Mr. Lyle Baconguis NEW ALUMNI OFFICERS The UP HortSoc alumni elected a new set of officers for 2000-2002 during the last homecoming. President: Lyle Baconguis Vice-President: Dr Fernando Sanchez Jr. Secretary: Crisanta Sunio-Bueno Treasurer: Angelita Galang-Umali Auditor: Pacita Agustin-Manalo PRO: Tibo Arejola Lyle Baconguis, Ang Umali and Leny Bueno are the hold overs from the last set of officers. To introduce the new officers: Our new vice president, Dindo Sanchez, is an assistant professor in the ornamental crops division of the UPLB Department of Horticulture and holds a PhD in landscape architecture from the Tokyo University of Agriculture. Dindo, who is very much single, is currently taking up short courses in turf management at Rutgers University. Our auditor, Paz Manalo, is a project development officer for the UPLB Credit and Development Cooperative with a primary responsibility for housing. She is also wife to Dr Dave Manalo of the UPLB Farming Systems and Soil Resources Institute and mother to Joyce, Aryan and Joshua. Our PRO, Tibo Arejola, has just made a career move from being a training officer of the Bonifacio Trees and Greens Corporation, to becoming a restauranteur. His restaurant 93square is on the 3rd floor of the Vega Mall just outside the UPLB gate. Tibo and his wife Melissa live in Laguna Bel-Air in Santa Rosa. We would also like to thank the previous officers: Ike Barile, vice president; Ana Tuico-Papag, treasurer and Tess Gerpacio-Sta. Cruz, auditor; for their support during the past two years. HOMECOMING'00 Homecoming 2000 was held at the Ornamental Crops Nursery during Loyalty Day. The alumni were led by our ever reliable senior members, Dave Santos of Nestle Philippines; Dr Chito Protacio, chairman of the UPLB department of horticulture, Dr Nido Naranja, Reynold Pimentel of IPB, Cherrie Deanon-Nicdao of TNC Landscaping-Brunei, Jules Magpantay of the Agricultural Training Institute and Ang Umali. The alumni were welcomed by the resident members led by President Vince Severino Magat, president, and Maecel Gonzaga, vice-president. Rey Pimentel served as emcee for the HortSoc bingo with Joey Quintana of Dynamic Bank going off with the major bingo and door prizes. Corporate prize donors included BASF and Aventis. Other donors were Nelson Adorable and Zaldy Arbitrario who donated exotic Brazilian peach palm seedlings from their ornamental farm in Sampaloc, Quezon, the UPLB Department of Horticulture and the Institute of Plant Breeding for mussaenda and gumamela seedlings; and Dorie Larona, marketing manager of Asia Pacific Golf Products. HORTSOC MOVEMENTS Ike and Meann Barile have moved again. Ike was appointed Monsanto Company's territory lead for northern Mindanao and have moved to Cagayan de Oro from Davao where they lived for the past year. Joel and Malou Laserna have moved back to Luzon after almost a decade in Digos, Davao del Sur. Joel took a promotion as horticulture business manager of Aventis CropScience. The Lasernas now live in Laguna Bel-Air, Santa Rosa. Alaric Santiaguel is now back in Los Banos as the information officer for SEARCA. Alaric previously was the information officer for the Palawan Tropical Forestry Protection Programme. Rey Pimentel of the Institute of Plant Breeding will be moving to the Del Monte agricultural research department in Bukidnon to join their fruit breeding program. Juverglen Ilagan is sales supervisor for P.T. Cerna, distributor of Solo backpack sprayers. Glen is also doing his masters degree in management at UPLB. Ricardo Morales is now with the Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines. The following HortSoccers are active in the UP Alumni Associations: Norma Payawan an assistant professor of horticulture at the University of Southern Mindanao is president of the UP Alumni Association Kabacan (Cotabato) Chapter while Editha Moskito-Ramolete is a member of the Board of Directors for the UP Alumni Association La Union Chapter. PERSONALS Towards the end of 2000 and the early part of 2001, we were happy to learn of: Irma Quintana flying home to Los Banos from California for her church wedding to formally become Mrs Monserrat; Robert Rubico, also flying in from California for his wedding in Villa Escudero, Tiaong, Quezon on the 30th of December; Karyl Zantua 's email in end of December announcing her marriage to Noel in Florida; Jingle Quintana tying the knot with Sherill Ramos in early January in Los Banos; New babies for Raphy Quintana in Los Banos; and for Nhel and Eyeth Belviz in Davao City.
