Well, looks like I went off half-cocked. I just got off the phone with McNown's
uncle, who set me straight on a couple of things -- the kind that rarely
cross an editor's desk. Sad, that, because what would be considered "fluff"
in big-city journalism wou d be welcomed in small towns like these. Had I
known of the work that McNown has done with kids, I never would've made my
previous post. I took the UCLA parking "scandal" and comments I've heard
from some local residents and added them up to a too-quick t tal of "McNown's
a jerk." This, of course, was wrong, and I apologize to anyone who was offended
by my crass statements. However, Kathryn... when you make a statement (regarding
me) such as "...who has never met Cade nor talked with him personally..."
where are *your* facts? The tape of the conversation I had with McNown after
Sports Illustrated's 1998 college football prev ew issue came out (it caused
quite a stir in Hollister) is in my desk drawer. If you'd like to pursue

I happen to know the McNown family very well and have known Cade for years.
I find it a little frightening that the sports editor for the Hollister Free
Lance (who has never met Cade nor talked with him personally) can make an
outlandish statement accusing him of "beating up underclassmen for the h---
of it". Cade never fought in or out of school. Where are your facts, Mr.
Reporter? That's what's wrong with the press these days - these guys can
make any statment they want to and a people will accept it as truth. Apparently
he's "been told" that Cade wasn't liked in Hollister. Did he talk to any
one of his many friends and family? Did he just talk to some obscure people
who were mad because Cade left before his Senior year to move with his family

Doesn't anyone here keep tabs on reality? I'm sports editor of the newspaper
in the town where McNown played most of his high school football (not the
one in Oregon), and I can tell you that a lot of people here can't stand
him because of the attitude he ad when he lived here. (I've been told he
used to beat up underclassmen just for the hell of it, et al.) Apparently,
that attitude hasn't changed very much, if the recent scandal over the
"appropriation" of handicapped parking placards at UCLA is any indi ation.
I hope I live to see the day when athletes come to the realization that who
they are and what they do doesn't warrant the money, attention or adoration
they're given, nor should it entitle them to special treatment. But I suppose
that day will never come. br>

another championship. Ucla whould have been a power-house if it wasn't for

First, I'm must say you have an impressive web site! I'm a Chicago transplant
living here in the Bay Area and got my first look at Cade Mcnown last year
during his senior year at UCLA. Wow, I was very impressed with his talent!!!

Keep up the good work. I hope that Cincy trades down in the draft an takes
Cade. He's got that cocky attitude that Boomer had. There's no doubt he will
be sucessful in the NFL, as long as he goes to the right program. I think
