Comments: I was very interested in reading Linda's account of breast cancer radiation treatment, since I went through a very similar procedure just a couple months ago. I had 5 weeks of radiation and fortunately did not react or have the symptoms that Linda had. I feel very fortunate and thankful to all my caregivers and family as well. Comments: Red, my cat has had some problems with his right ear,dark drainage. We seemed to have cleared that up, but he started having problems with his balance, and loosing weight rapidly. My vet ran several tests, trying potassium for a short while, because of a ow pottasium level. Then it got worse and we came to the conclusion that it is Autoimmune disease. We are now treating it with steroids, there is some improvement,and a little weight gain, and Red is finally jumping on furniture again. I am trying to find more info on this disease, but cannot. If you know of somewhere I could look or have some info it would greatly be appreciated. We have over a $800.00 vet bill now, and I hope I am doing the right thing this time. We have 4 other adult cats and 4 dogs, on 14yrs, and a horse that thinks he is human.We buy more pet food than we do human food. Comments: I would really like to converse with you about Boots. I have a mixed male cat that looks just like he's a Maine Coon but I cannot confirm this. When we got him we noticed that as he got older he was very skinny and his fur was sruffy like. He is a gorg ous cat but there was no luster to his coat and he looked too scrawny but we could never get weight on him. I would feed him Iams kitten formula and cat tuna mixed in three times a day. We have had him since he was 6 wks old, he's now 13 months. About 6 months ago we noticed that he had inflammation on one side of his top lip. It lasted about 1-1 1/2 wks and wemt away. During that time it seemed like he would lose a little weight. It happened again about 3 times. The last time was back in june until t is weekend. I had brought him to a vet back n june and all they did was put him on clindimycin, after 5 days there was no improvement and they advised to stop giving it to him. It went away on its own and now this time it seemed worse. Now both tops li s and the bottom are swollen and pink and he stopped eating all together on Saturday night. I tried to give him the soft food but he would not have a bite. I decided to search the internet for any ifnormation on Sunday and the first site that caught my ye was Bott's Story. i read it and it seemed similar to Michael's ordeal with the symptoms you described. I would really like to discuss Boot's story with you further. I brought my cat to the vet today after printing out the information from your site nd felt empowered to walk in being informed and able to ask questions. This new vet was great, taking the time to answer my questions and discuss courses of treatment that are possible for the different disorders. I will find out tomorrow the results. am a little nervous though because she said there may be a possibility of Feline Aids which his original vet never even brought up or tested him for. The are doing a full CBC, FIV, & Feline Leukemia test. This little sweet angel of a feline is my baby nd I can't imagine all the pain that he has been through with this chronic problem and I can't wait to help control it so, he can be a happier and healthier boy. Michael had not eaten a thing in two days but after I left the vet's office this morning i made it for him and he could not eat it fast enough. Comments: One of my young feral cats developed an upper respiratory disease when she was about 1 1/2 years old which would not respond to any antibiotic. Her vacs were all up to date and she was under no stress whatsoever, is spayed, retested and found negative fo FIV/FeLV and had a heated pen to go into with plenty of food and fresh water. Her littermates just got sniffles and were find in a few days. She continued to get worse and worse until she actually let me nurse her (force feed her). She was so sick that we almost lost her and didn't didn't begin to get better until my vet, who also keeps up to date on new meds, procedures, suggested she be given interferon. She began to recover immediately and so far has not had a recurrence although she no longer takes interferon. I also have two FIV+ cats and although they do not have any health problems so far, it is good to know that interferon may be an option if they do. I am into cat rescue and have had FeLV+ cats in the past and am glad for the info. Maybe you can answer this question for me: The Feline Academy of Medicine's research found that the FeLV virus is not transmitted in a cat's urine but Cornell University say it may be. Right now I have an ex-barn cat, she was found wandering alone at about3 weeks, the herder put her with a tame mama cat so is friendly, very smart and active. Comments: I have a multiple cat (3) family. Bunny, my youngest is three, and will more than likely have a diagnosis of stomatitis. On 5/1/00 she had her annual dental (cleaning) surgery and just 30 days later I noticed her deep red colored gums. The vet gave me ome medication and she will have her check-up 6/10. I don't think she is responding well to the medication (gums are still red). She is eating, drinking, and using the litter box. You would hardly know that she is undergoing this problem. I am really orried about her so any advice you can provide would be helpful. We had a full grown cat came up to us last weekend and was severly underweight. so we took care of him (we just found out he is a he today) by feeding him. We took him to our regular vet today and found out he only weighs 8.2 pounds and was diagnosed with FIV. He has a sever mouth infection and has teeth missing. He is such a loving cat we just couldn't bear to put him down. We told the vet we wanted to treat him. He gave us the interferon drug, an an ibiotic for the mouth and a tube of vitamins in concentrate form. today was the first day of his treatment and after a very gloomy day all day we decided to look on the internet for more information regarding this disease, we ran across your story and gave us hope. we are very animal loving people as we have rescued and kept 3 cats and two dogs as well as another dog we found a home for. if you can provide us with any other info we would greatly appreciate it. I have copied several of the website and will spend my day tomorrow reading them as well as doing additional research. thanks so much for your great story of someone else who wasn't afraid of taking on the challange of an ill animal that would require constant medication. Comments: I loved your story about boots...It shows me that some people really care....I have been heart sick about the loss of my Stripers--a persian cat who received two shots of depo medrol because of skin lesions and proceeded to go down down down until he beca e too sick and I am looking for answer if those shots enhanced his sickness....I became concerned when a vet told me a cat should never get depo medrol unless blood work is done first. It made me feel the vet who initially took care of him wasnt thinking or plain just wasnt looking for the right answer...I will never forget my Stripers....He trusted me and I feel I killed him....because I didnt get a second opinion.....I was too late and not rich enough to keep him in critical care unit.....After spending about fifteen hundred dollars he wouldnt eat and I euthanized him because he seemed so miserable...But if only I had a truly concerned vet I think he would have made it... Comments: I just had to put down a kitty today from FeLV. He wandered to my house last year and I took him in despite my nine other cats. He was always there, sweet, loving, never fighting or messing with the other cats. He was always positive FeLV, but I didn't want to face the time when he would go. One of his last gestures was to walk gingerly upto me and rub my leg. I miss him so. He was not demanding but always there affectionately. Comments: Hi, I plan on reading all the info on interferon and feline stomatitis you have links to. My cat, LC, has had stomatitis since he was around 2 years old. He is 10 now. My first vet was treating him with prednisone injections once a month (sometimes every 3 weeks) for 7 years, plus clavamox 2X daily. He suggested pulling all his teeth, but I was too squeemish. LC contacted diabetes, and I found the feline diabetes message board. After reading posts from other cat owners with diabetes, I learned more than y vet knew. Especially, that the steroids could be why LC was diabetic. Long story, but I almost lost LC to diabetes, but on the board, met a girl closby with 2 diabetic cats with a very knowledgable vet. I saw her, she got LC off steroids, started trea ing his mouth with interferon once a day and I also wash his mouth with a mouthwash for dogs and cats with gum disease. Within 8 weeks, LC was totally off insulin. He has not had any insulin since end of August 99. His mouth is looking better than it e er did on the steroids, but he still has inflamation and redness. I also give him baytrill/flagyl antibiotics one week a month, when his mouth starts to flare up. He is not cured, but it is such a relief to not have a diabetic cat anymore, and he eats g od, dry food as well as canned. We did pull all the teeth on the right side as he had 2 bad ones that had to come out anyway, and sorry to say, there is some improvement on that side, but not enough to make me or the vet comfortable enough to pull all hi teeth on the left, at least for now, but could be an option in the future. Comments: I was very touched by your beautiful web site and adorable pictures. I cried often as you detailed the anguish of finding the right treatment for your pet(s)and finally succeeding. I, too, adopted a special needs cat shortly after putting my dog of many y ars to sleep. The emptiness was so great. We went to a local shelter that rescues animals.He came to me in the shelter room set aside for adult cats. He climbed right up, sat on my shoulder and kissed me. It was love at first site. Poor Nicki had lost his owner to some illness, no details were provided, and was an orphan,I wasn't even at my own home at the time but vacationing at my mothers'summer home- but I took Nicki, even with his "allergies" as the shelter called them. His runny nose and eyes were n allergies. But I would do anything to help him. Keep up the good work of giving hope to those who may lose it too soon. Our cat Snoops has had mouth problems off and on since we have had him and our new vet has told us he has stomatitis. He also gets bad cold .
