Comments: Phil Hartman was one of the funniest men I've ever seen. The way he had a presence on the screen, the way that presence held you until he said what he had to say, and the way it made you laugh afterward. I'll never forget that look he gave Mike Myers in "So I Married an Axe Murderer", and that smarmy self righteous voice of his, the way he appeared no to give a damn about anybody but himself. Its so tragic when entertainers die under any circumstances, we feel we know these people because they bring out something in us that is personal, "laughter" and a natural human tendency takes over, we automatically feel closer to that person that makes us laugh. Phil Hartman's death is even more tragic because of what was to come, what else would we enjoy from him how many more looks and sound bites would we have of him? God bless you Phil for making me laugh and may you rest in peace.

Comments: I recently was sickened by a co-worker who actually believes Phil shot his whole family then killed himself. I was very saddened by the individuals serious belief of this dreadful misinformation. It made me want to log on to this site and express how much I and my friends miss Phil. I don't think I've ever cried over the passing of any celebrity until I cried for Phil. Then when Jan Hooks, Jon Lovitz and company tearily introduced his tribute on the 25th anniversary show, I cried again. NO performer in the history of the arts will ever be missed more than Phil Hartman, mainly because of all the things he had yet to give us. His memory will live forever, as I hope every single thing he ever did on canvas(album covers, etc), film and television does! Comments: I didn't hear about it when it happened... I was watching my favorite show, Newsradio, a few months ago. Bill Mcneil is and always will be my favorite character on that show, and Phil sure played him well. This time was different. This was the show where hey got rid of his character. And even though there were alot of funny moments in this episode, I couldn't laugh. I kept denying it. I thought that it was all a big joke. I just kept thinking, "any minute now he is going to pop out and laugh." That was ty ical of Bill McNeil. But he didn't... And I said to my wife, Bill McNeil is dead... and she said, "Who? Phil Hartman? He died like six months ago." And I kept thinking "why?" John Candy? Why? Chris Farley? Why? Phil Hartman? Why? There are no answers. And as I was getting used to dealing with Newsradio without him (don't get me wrong, John Lovitz is a great actor) Things just weren't the same. Tonight I just saw a rerun from the first season and started to miss him even more. I know I've never met any of t ese wonderful people in my life, but I wish I had, because They have all had an impact on my life. They made me laugh, and helped me carry on. I couldn't even comprehend it... I loved Phil,I mean, I adored him. I cried. I never met the guy in my life, but I knew him. We all did. I was 13, then, and I had just started watching SNL repeats on Comedy Central. Phil's characters were annoying guys that you just loved to hate. They would just get under your skin...But he was, as Lorne Michaels(another brilliant Canadian man) told us, "the glue." You need an arrogant a-hole? Call one of the nicest guys in comedy, Phil. To all Phil's family and friends, I'm not only sorry, I'm furious. This seems so unfair...Jon Lovitz, if you ever see t is, the tribute on the SNL25 thing was beautiful, and no one else could have replaced your "older brother" on Newsradio. And Phil... we love you, we'll always love you. Thank you for everything.

Comments: What a wonderful tribute you have put together! I do not normally contribute to things like this but I thought you would enjoy a story I have of Phil. Phil, myself and 3 others were all thrown together on a climb (some people would call it insanity) up Mt Mckinley about 3 years ago. We had hired the same guide so we were all taken up together. I had no idea who he was at the time. To think that his life was extinguished by something as simple as a piece of lead after climbing a mountain as treacherous as McKinley is almost unthinkable. In truth without him I do not know if I would have made it. I have asthma (my own personal challenge) and there were times the thin air made it especially difficult for me to carry the gear I had. Without a word he would pi k up my pack as well as his own and take it part of the way for me, until I got my wind back. He seemed the most experienced of the bunch and was the one to give the pep talk when one of us wanted to turn back. When we finally reached the summit, we were warded with the most breathtaking view imaginable. We were all a bit dizzy from our conquest (and lack of oxygen) and giddy. Then we all became very quiet as we took in what we accomplished. I remember Phil just standing there (oddly enough) with his eyes closed. I didn't quite understand why until now. You don't need to see something to experience it. I remember thinking that we could just reach out and touch heaven, we were so high up. Now, when I think of him I can't help but picture him standing on hi own private mountain, eyes closed touching heaven. Thanks Phil for helping me reach the top. Sandy DeMarsh

About one week after I heard this great news I was invited to the Sanderson Centre in Brantford, Ontario to see Phil get entere into the "walk-of-fame" in his home town. After the ceremony Phil presented me with the only repleca in the world of the plaque that he had gotten that day. He even autographed it for me. I guess the SNL and News Radio reruns helped me to believe that he was still in some way going to r turn to us for more laughs. Now I realize all we have are the memories. May God care well for such a man. He was and is still loved.

He's made me laugh more frequently, and with more consistency, than any celebrity I know. His brief scene in "So I Married an Axe Murderer" MADE that movie; his ruthless Frank Sinatra character has resulted in my ALWAYS secretly referring to bald people as "cue ball"; I still try -- and fail -- to do the Ed McMahon "YEEESSS!" with the zeal that Phil Hartman had -- t uly, he did Ed McMahon better than Ed McMahon. Comments: When I was three, the funniest movie ever written came out (Pee-Wee's Big Adventure.) I grew up with the Playhouse and Cap'n Carl. I thought Phil was one of the best cast-members of SNL. Comments: I was a friend of Phil's when he drove a Vega stationwagon (really!) & was thrilled to have made $12,000 for the year off of his art work. He was living with Karen Johnson (where is she now? I had heard she married a producer & moved to Chicago), his hi h school sweetheart (they were reunited later), who was a home ec. teacher & loved antiques. Biggest mistake of his life: not marrying her! She was a sweetheart, great cook, adored him, etc. His mother told everyone that they were married because she w s Catholic & they were living in sin! The problem was that he was just starting with the Groundlings & gone until all hours, etc. She finally moved out (they first rented a condo in Malibu, then bought a house together in Sherman Oaks) when she found ou that he had been seeing other women. My first reaction to his murder was that his wife found out that he was in love with someone else. Phil was someone who loved life. Period. He had a special gift in pinpointing what was unique in a person & enjoyi g their personality. He was great fun on a personal level & could make ordinary, everyday hanging out into an adventure. I haven't really followed his career, but found it strange to watch him age & change without him seeing me. He was my buddy, not an entertainer. I went back to LA once a little later. He kept the Serman Oaks house as an investment & his time he had an old white VW. "It's paid for, Cathy." was all he said. You see, Phil enjoyed fads & toys & changes, & they were costly. He had so d his Vega & bought a big truch when he went through his Urban Cowboy phase. I was happy for him to become famous because I thought, "Good, now he can have all the toys he wants!" I guess I could say that was my absolute favorite characteristic in Phil: he was playful. I have no doubt that he was a great father. He had wanted to start a family for the longest time. I'll miss watching him from afar. I had thought of contacting him again when I saw he was on SNL, but decided he would be too busy & to famous for me now. After reading about him since his death, I was probably wrong. He was still the same Phil (nickname "Phip") that always had a funny recording on his answer machine & could make me laugh spontaneously. He had an introspective side, t ough, which I also very much enjoyed. We would talk about our relationships a great deal. I'm sure he did everything in his power to try to keep his marriage together. My guess is that he married "Brynn" a.k.a. Vicky for all the wrong reasons. He went "babe" Hollywood in his choice of a wife who probably married him for what she thought he could do for her & her career. I still think spliting up with Karen was a huge mistake. They had a deep connection rooted in solid ties & a passionate love. What shame. If you know where Karen is, please let me know. Thanks for providing a place to honor Phil's memory.

Comments: I was asleep when I heard about Mr. Hartman's death. My brother came and woke me and said, "Hey Steve, Phil Hartman's dead." As you can imagine I was in shock. I couldn't believe it. The man I laughed over yesterday was the same man I almost cryed over to ay. You know, folks drugs wreck a lot of lives. They wrecked Belushi's, Farley's and also Hartman's. I know Phil didn't use drugs, but Brynn did. The cops even found her drug dealer. Bottom line: Stop the drugs, before they stop us!
