I am a homebirth midwife who does not routinely screen for GBS (only if the client desires), but does do preventative herbs in every client. If a client of mine has tested positive for GBS I would not hesitate to do IV antibiotics when they are affected y PROM, high fever, etc., but I don't feel that routine use of IV therapy is warrented...a lot of my clients are having a homebirth BECAUSE they didn't want an IV! If I am doing herbal treatment (not yet approved, of course...but we know it works!) and s ggest oral antibiotics in addition to no vaginal checks and NO risk factors...isn' that enough? Are there any natropathic physicians out there that deal with this? Aren't there more risks to having an IV (inserted improperly or monitored improperly, dru fever, embolism, etc.) than there is incidence of GBS in infants of a low risk positive mom?

Thank you for putting the information about Group B Strep on the Internet. Unfortunately, some of the "Links to other sites on the Web", I was not able to view from my computer wither my system was not compatable or the address has been changed. I do re lize, however, that the information at this web address about GBS is a few years old. I came to this web site in search of information for a presentation I will be doing for March 23,2000. Thank you again for the information. Katherine

I have a son that is 19 months old. He is a late onset GBS survivor. I found this site to be very helpful. It has alot of good information. One thing that I would like to stress is that my membranes were ruptured for around 30-45 minutes and I was giv n 1 IV antibiotic and he still ended up with this horrible bacteria. To me there is not enough info out there. This bacteria is very harmful to newborns and babies up to 7 months of age. Thank you

He did have some of the symtoms, sleepy, not feeding well, however today he is feeding well and the bloods have not come up with anything serious. He is also on antibotics, the f eding is well 100ml every 3 hours and he is passing water and stools ok. I pray to God that there has been no serious damage, like all babies he is very precious to me and my wife Sandra. Pat

On February 24, 1998 I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. We named her Samantha Ann Judy. 2 1/2 hrs. after she was born she started having trouble breathing. She was diagnosed with Group B Strep and was life flighted to Children's Hospital in Denver nd put on the E.C.M.O. machine. She only lived one very short week. We are in the middle of a lawsuit. I had never heard of Group B Strep, and I was never tested for it. It is so hard to understand why Samantha had to lose her precious life over somet ing that is so preventable!! I am striving to make a difference and make people aware of what this infection is. Samantha's life was obviously not important enough to my OB/GYN, but it was so precious to me that I need to do this for her and the sake of the unborn babies that may come in contact with this awful infection!!

I would like to see more info/research on latent onset Group B Strep. My daughter, Julia died from complications of this/meningitis 9/17/96. It is my understanding that perinatal chemoprophylaxis does not offer protection against latent onset disease. I am now 32 weeks gestation with a baby boy and have sought the attention of a neonatologist who will manange my baby at birth. They are planning perinatal maternal chemoprophylaxis despite the fact that I was cultured and negative twice-at 37 weeks and t the day of delivery. They suspect that Julia developed the infection noscomially through the Newborn nursery. By coincidence-15 minutes before she was delivered, my obstetrician delivered a baby to a 15year old girl who had no prenatal care. What abo t sloppy aswptic technique in the nursery? Transference of disease from an aymptomatic colonized baby delivered from a GBS + mom with this baby never becoming sick-but yet infecting other babies in the nursery? What ever happened to gowns, gloves, and m sk use in the Nursery? What measures can be taken to avoid latent onset infection other than good old fashioned hand washing?? The immunization is yet too far away! I miss my daughter Julia who was 9-9 Apgar; suddenly became ill at 28days and was gone a 34 days. The hell with cost effectiveness! No mother should see their child die when methods for prevention are available! In memory of sweet Julia Fay Regan, in honor of her life, I respectfully submit my comments.

Thank you! My 8 month old baby was born with GBS. Thanks to rapid doses of antibiotics, he is a survivor. A scary and silent disease. Thanks again for the information.

My daughter-in-law has just been informed this week that she is Strep B. Her baby is due in 4 weeks. I do appreciate all the information on the net, even though, we are very worried, we now have more information to follow up on. Thank you for the chanc to become more educated on a "quiet KILLER" of our little ones. This is a very special and very loved little one. God Bless All Of You.

Interesting Web page. I was looking for info on Strep other than A or B but picked up information on type B of which I wasn't aware. I like the Medline references. Thanks.

Hi I went to your page on Group B Strep and the last link on your page is a link to my page. the Url has a mistake in it. the correct URL is http://www.angelfire.com/ca/gbstrep and if you would please mention that we have a mailing list for people feeling the effects of GBS. Thanks! :-) -- Cheryl
