According to his Pension application, Joseph Tilton fought in the Rev. War in 1775 and 1776. I am unsure in what capacity, however he enlisted in the 1st NJ in the fall of 1777, probably fighting in the battles at Brandywine and Paoli. Following the Battl of Germantown he marched to Valley Forge and is on the muster roll for the encampment of the 1st NJ from Dec. 1777 to June, 1778. He remained with his unit until he was honorably discharged by General Washington at the New Windsor Encampment when peace w s declared in 1783. He settled in New Windsor, Orange Co. N.Y.

His deposition for a pension states that he entered the service in 1780-81 in place of Joseph Matthews who had enlisted for a tour of 12 months in the Regular Service in a company commanded b Captain Carter and Lt Dudley in the First Regiment commanded by Col Lytle and Maj Armstrong. He recollects being at a place called the Round O and the Pond Fronds and also Bacon's Bridge and the battle of Eutaw Springs where he was wounded with a bayone in the left arm. After discharge he removed to Lincoln Co KY, Wilson Co TN for 21 years, then to Humphrey Co TN. His last known address was Chalklevel, Benton Co TN.

With his friend John Silvas they took patent along the Jordan (now Easton, PA), Other information states he emigra ed 9-26-1741 on the St. Mark. Other conflicting info shows he was born 1742. He had four sons, Samuel (whom I am a descendent of) John (I have info on John also), Jacob and Abraham (no info on Abraham). John Valentine Stopp was reported to be captured at Fort Washington in November 1776 and never returned to family. His widow Maria Catherine ? married a Kleckner.

John Davis was Born Sept. 5, 1760 in Bucks County, Pa. He died Jan. 25, 1832 in Dublin, Ohio. He married Ann Simpson in 1783. John Davis was of Welsh and Irish blood and was loyal to the cause of the colonies. On the 4th of June 1776 the Continential C ngress ordered a "Flying Camp", to which Bucks County Pa. was to supply 400 men--one of them being John Davis. He was in the company of Capt. Wm. Hart, & served thru the fall of Fort Washington & Ft. Lee and also the loss of New Jersey. He took part in the Ambroy Expedition. He was then discharged. As the Continentials were emcamped in his home area, he was with Washington at the crossing of the Delaware to attack Trenton. Probably as a volunteer. He enlisted into the Continential Service in the win er of 1777 in Capt. Thomas Butler's company, Third Pa. Regt. In the absence of muster papers, rolls & his discharge papers it is impossible to name all the organizations he was a member of. He assisted the wounded Lafayette to a place of safety at Brandy ine, Pa. He also was at the battles of Germantown, Monmouth, Stoney Point, Bergin Point, & he claimed to have marched south in 1781 & was present at the seige of Yorktown. He witnessed the surrender of Cornwallace. He moved with his family from Pa. to aryland in 1796 and then to Ohio in 1816. Any further info about family would be appreciated.

Records show that Robert Blair served in the Revolutionary War as a private in the Commander-in-Chief's Guard, commanded at various times by Major Caleb Gibbs, Lt. Levi Holden, Lt. William Colfax. His name appears of the rolls of that organization coveri g the period from April 1st l778 to April 1783. Neither the date of his entry into service nor the date or manner of his separation is shown. However, it is stated on the records that he enlisted for the war and served from Feb. 1, 1777 to Aug. l, 1780. His name appears on a similar return dated June 4, 1783, which shows that he belonged to the state of New Jersey. It is believed that he enlisted in Bordentown, NJ. He was in the battle of Short Hill, NJ June 1777; Brandywine, Sept. 1777 and battle of Ge mantown Oct. 1777. He was transferred to Valley Forge March 19, 1778 and was also at battles of Monmouth, NJ; Connecticut Farms, NJ; Kingsbridge, NY and Yorktown, Va. He was discharged at Newburg, NY Nov. 3, 1783 where he remained until his death in March 1841. He married Mary Osbourne and had 9 children: John, Margaret (m. Wm. E. Sheffield) Mary (m. Samuel Lockwood), Barnard (m. Sarah Edwards), Walter, Daniel, Robert, William and Anthony. In his will dated Mar. 1841 it is stated that his "son John, lives in the Arkansas Territory (town unknown) and son Robert resides in Tuscaloosa, State of Alabama" Nothing more is known of John and Robert. In Sept. 1999, his grave was rededicated with a new stone grave marker placed on his grave by the local DAR. At this time we were told that Robert was born in Scotland and that his wife Mary was of American Indian (Mohawk) heritage. Many descendents me for the first time at a lovely reception following the ceremony.

Kirkpatrick met his death during the Revolution in his own home surrounded by family during a Tumultuous period of the war. SC. Was torn by the war, by shifting allegiances, by bitter blood fights between Patriots and Tories, by family differences After a engagement James Kirkpatrick went parole for capturing Tory meighbor named Mayfield, allowing him to return home to his family. The men returned home to their respective homes. Still smarting from battle loss, a group of Tories who had discovered from Ma field that Kirkpatrick had returned home, surrounded his house. Bursting through the doors they killed him in front of his wife and kids. The date was orginarily given as New Years Day, 1781.

Thomas Vaughn fought in the Battle of Trenton under Captain John Hewson and Colonel Benjamin G. Eyre. He served in the Malitia from 1779 to 1783. He was married to Mary Bryan.They had ten children. He died on February 12, 1842 and was buried in the Palme Burial Grounds, Philadelphia. Thomas was my great-great-great-great grandfather.

Jacob Terpening was born in New Paltz 1757, son of Jacobus Terpenning and Marietje Beem. He was baptized 21 August 1757 (N.P.D.R.C.p.104 New Paltz Record), witnesses: Boudewyn Teerpenning and wife Elizabeth. Jacob Terpenning was a Private in December 1782 in the company commanded by Capt. John L. Hardenburg belonging to a regiment of the levies of militia raised for the defense of the state, which regiment was then under the command of Lt. Col. Frederick Weisenfels, and was called to the field of active se vice in April 1782. After the Revolution, Jacob settled on the Terpenning farm (later called Turkey Hill) in the town of Summit, where he lived as a farmer. Jacob married Elizabeth Wey (Weight, Way) about 1802. They had two children: Maria Maritze Terpe ing and Cornelius Terpening. Jacob Terpening died 15 Mar 1813.

My ancestor’s services during the Revolutionary War were as follows: Simeon Hicks first entered the service of the United States in the War of the revolution on the day after the Battle of Lexington in 1775, when he entered in the Mass Militia, under Samuel Poff, Captain, and marched from Rehoboth to Roxbury and served dur ng this campaign, nine months, under Levi Bowen of Rehoboth, in the Brigade under General Putnam. He assisted in the building of the Roxbury Fort and making redoubts between Dorchester Neck and Heights and at Roxbury. The day of Bunker Hill Battle he wa at Dorchester Heights with the company to which he belonged employed in building the breastworks. At the expiration of his term he returned to Rehoboth. In Feb. 1776, a few days later he re-enlisted for two months under Capt. John Pain and Lt. Samuel C rpenter and marched to Winter Hill. He assisted in building of the fortifications on the Dorchester Heights, and filling hogsheads and barrels to roll on the British should they attempt to ascend. He remained until his discharge, and assisted in making he entrenchments below Bristol. In May, 1777 he entered the service again as a substitute for his brother, Asa Hicks, and marched from Richmond under Capt. Ashley of Winchester to Clarenden. In June 29, 1777 he was a private on the rolls of Captain Oliv r Capron’s Co., Col Samuel Ashleys Regiment of Militia, which marched to the relief of Ticonderoga in 1777. He re-enlisted as a private in Captain Samuel Wright’s Company in Col, Nichols regiment, in Gen. Stark’s Brigade of Militia and marched from Winch ster, NH to fight in the Battle of Bennington. Was discharged Sept. 24, 1777.

James Beaty, my gggggrandfather, volunteered for four campaigns during the years 1775-1778. He lived in Rowan County, NC at his first enlistment and returned there after each campaign. James was the first or second son of John Beaty SR and Margaret Montgo ery, born in Chester County, PA in 1752 or 1753. I have his pension application with many details of his RW campaigns. James eventually migrate to Cumberland County, KY and then to Rutherford County, TN, where he died and is buried.

George Guy was a member of the committee of Safety and Justice of the peace of Caroline Co., VA, 1774. In December 1777, Joseph Dejarnatt and Samuel Norment took oaths to the commonwealth as ensigns in the militia. The were assigned to the 13th Company under George Guy, Captain and Joseph Richardson, First Lieutenant. George Guy took his oath as an offic r on November 15, 1777 in Jan. 1779 Captain Guy resigned. He was born 1725 and died in Caroline Co., VA in Nov. 1803. Captain George Guy is listed in the lineage Book in the National Society of the Daughters of the American Colonists in vo.IV page 305.

I have received three(3)vouchers with hole punches(two vouchers w/ 2 holes & one voucher with 1 hole) that have my ancestor's name, William Ellis as the recipient. The information gotten from the vouchers include the following: State of North Carolina- Hillsborough Auditor Office. All vouchers have the names John Nichols and Alex McBane in the lower right hand corner. On the back of one voucher(2 hole punch) is the name John Hinds. It is assumed that this is the Captain John Hinds that was the Captain of the Unit On the back of another voucher(two hole punch) is written the name, William Clark. I believe there was a Captain Wm Clark who served in the NC militia, but I have no record that my ancestor served in his regiment. Voucher # 1- June 10th, 1783 (Wm Clark on back) Voucher # 2- June 10th, 1783(one hole punch) Voucher # 3- October ?, 1783(John Hinds on back) I am trying to figure out the significance of these vouchers and who the men were that had their names on the vouchers. My great,great,great,great grandfather Col. John Sevier, was one of the hero's at the Battle of King's Mountain in October, 1780. He later became the First Governor of the State of Tennessee. He served a total of six terms. He was then elected to Congress and served four years. He was re-elected to Congress in 1815 without his knowledge. He was on a mission from President Madison. He died on that mission in 1815. He is buried on the courthoust lawn in Knoxville, Tennessee. Sevier County and Sevierville, TN in the Great Smoky Mountains are named after him.

Abraham Haptonstall was born in Blooming Grove, Orange County, NY on 6 April 1761, served in the Revolutionary War in Spring and Summer 1775, Spring and Summer of 1776, and in the Summer of 1777--he was in the battle of "Storming the British Fort" at Ston Point, NY under the command of Gen. "Mad Anthony" Wayne. I have a geneology of direct-decendents from Haptonstall from 1640 through 1935. Surnames of children of Abraham, all born in West Virginia are: 5 sons-all Haptonstalls, 6 daughters of Abraham bor in West Virginia: Bright, Cherrington, Rambo, Parkins, Spencer (and one child died in infancy). Alexander served in the Naval Service of the Sate of New Jersey under Capt. Hand six months from May to November 1776. He next entered the Naval Service of the State of NJ under Capt. Stillwell in Sept 1777 on board the Schooner Hawk. But after being tw lve days at sea, he was taken prisoner and confined to a prison ship for three months. He next entered the privateer service under Capt. Simmons, but was shortly taken prisoner and again confined to a prison ship from which he escaped. He again shipped n board a privateer in 1781 and served nine months, first under Capt. Hand, 2nd under Capt. Stillwell, 3rd under Capt. Simmons and 4th under Capt. Griffin.

Early in the spring of 1780 0r 1781 (He can't say for certainty which) he enlisted at Halifax, a foresaid, for 9 months in the Vermont troops, went to Pittsford, VT and joined a company commanded by Capt Hutchins of Bennington, in which the other officers whom he recollects were Lt Spencer of Bennington and Ensign Brookins. In Sept. he was marched in this comapny to Castletown and found the regiment commanded by Col Ebenezer Allen in which Issac Clark was major. In the month of Oct the British landed at S eensboro(?) (now Whitehall) in the state of New York. Alarm guns were fired at Castleton for the troops or Militiamen to come in, and James was marched in a detachment under Maj Clark to Fort Ann in the state of New York. The fort was surrendered the mor ing they arrived. The British then marched toward Fort George and Tigconderoga, and Major Clark's detachment returned to Castleton. James Pratt was born in Ware Massachusetts in 1763. moved to Halifax( where located at time of service), then to Pawlett(Rutland co ) Vermont in approx 1790 and remained his entire life. He was th last living survivor of the Revolutionary War in Pawlett Vermont until his death in 1854 at 91. In 1832 James Pratt appeared in open court, before the Judge of the Court of Probate for the district of Fairhaven, to make the declaration in order to obtain the benefits of the Act of Congress passed June 7 1832. Barnabus (Barney) McGuire enlisted July 1775 at Carlisle, Pa., "in Capt. Wm Hendrick's Company of Riflemen for one year," was "marched to Boston and then to Quebec under Col. (Benedict) Arnold," according to his testimony in pension records. He was captu ed at Battle of Quebec, held prisoner for about eight months and escaped with several friends. Rejoined American army and re-enlisted in 1st Pennsylvania under command of Col. Thomas Robinson for five years. Among battles in which he fought were Monmouth Germantown, White Plains and Stoney Point where he was wounded in the thigh. A pension granted in 1818. Barney died in 1825 and although exact site not known, most probably Derry, Westmoreland Co., Pa., where he lived with his wife and children from 179 onward. His wife, Jane Pendergast, a descendant of Garrett Pendergast, received a widow's pension until her death in 1837. Six known children: Phillip, Robert (who fought in War of 1812), Pendergast (my line), Nancy, Margaret and Jane.

John fought in the Revolutionary War and applied for a War Pension on March 18, 1821. The pension was for $8 a month, signed by J.C. Calhoun. (Continental Virginia pension # S37775) According to an account recorded at the Giles County Courthouse on Jun 10 1821 and signed by David French, John enlisted as a private under Captain John Smith in 1778. He enlisted in the 13th Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel Campbell and Brigade commanded by General Broadhead. He also fought in the Light Horse Brig de commanded by Colonel Washington, the cousin to the Commander in Chief. My mother, Sidney Shingleton, obtained these records from the National Archives in Washington, DC. John fought at the Battle of the Eutaw Springs and the Battle of Cowpens (both in South Carolina). He was discharged by General Greene at Bacon's Bridge. John Biggs was entitled to 200 acres of land for his service in the VA Continental line, as evidenced by a land-office military warrant #1629. As of yet, I have been unable to determine if the warrant was claimed and land surveyed. It was not in KY. On possibility is that his sons, James and Moses (who both moved to Indiana) claimed the land. They both claimed or purchased land patents with a total acreage of 200 acres. John's will was probated on January 18, 1827. It reads: "Will of John Biggs, sick. Beloved wife, Mary Biggs; 2 cows and household furniture and 1 mare, as long as she lives. And at her death, to belong to Delilah Biggs, my granddaughter. To Thomas Biggs, 1 horse and rest of property". John Snidow, admin Wit; Christian Snidow III, Andrew Guner, James Clark. Per interviews conducted by a lawyer in 1750 there were thirteen heads of households in Virginia with the surname Kelly or Kelley. All except one were Loyal soldiers of the line. But something happened between 1750 and 1780 because my particular Kelly lin faught against the British during the Revolutionary War. 4gfather Alexander (there were two Alexanders and the other one went to Kentucky) Kelly was b 1755 K&Q County Virginia and as a young man served in the Virginia Militia (meaning he served with Geor e Washington in some capacity). Alexander was in Burke Co North Carolina by 1778 where 3gfather Hiram (Hyrum) Kelly was b 1778(?). Hiram was in Georgia by 1820 where 2gfather Jesse R. Kelly was b 1833 Habersham Co Georgia. By 1858 the families, except for older children who stayed behind) were near Atlanta, GA. In 1858 Hiram moved to Arkansas. Jesse gradusted Atlanta Medical Scholl as a doctor and followed his father to Arkansas in 1859. My gfather Marcus Lafaette Kelly was born 1855 (?) near Atlanta. Happy to connect with other cousins. From the rev. war abstract of pension files the widow of john johnson r5604 of the new york line, caty johnson applied for a pension in sep. 13,1847 her age was 82 she married john on nov.1,1781 at kinderhook n.y.where they lived when john joined up.John ied at stockbridge Oneida cty. may 12,1823. Caty Johnson claimed that john had served with Col. Willets troops during the war. The request for a pension was denied since caty couldn't provide papers to prove that her john was the john who served with col. willet The n.y. genweb for montgomery twp. military census has a scout named john johnson serving in the 3rd reg. tryon county militia during the war. My family has a powderhorn with an inscription stating that "john johnson used this horn while serving as a scout for Washington" and that he gave it to his son william from him to his son abraham then to his nephew john my great grandfather.

He fought in the battle of Guilford Courthouse against Cornwallis, where he was wounded. He contracted small pox sho tly thereafter and left the service. He moved to Tennessee around 1803. He applied for his pension in 1832 and his wife applied for widow's pension in 1844. I am looking for as much information as I can on William Wiley (or Willey).

Jacob fought with Gen. Nathaniel Green at Guilford Court House against Lord Cornwallis. His wife Mary, upon hearing that the Americans had retreated to Guiford Court House, rode horseback with another wife to bring food and clothing to their husbands. Mar survived a near drowning at the rain swollen Yadkin River and was at the battle with Jacob. In 1782, Jacob "condemned his outgoing in marriage and taking up arms in a warlike manner" and was received back into the Quaker Church. He later moved to Flat Rock, Henry County, Indiana. Jacob died from a kick by a horse, June 9, 1831.

My 4th g-grandfather, John R. Livingston, b. 1755 at Clermont, Columbia Co., N.Y., d. 10/03/1851 in Red Hook, N.Y. Commissioned as a junior officer in 1775 along with his brother Henry Beekman Livingston, when they joined the Continental Army expeditiona y force formed to invade the Canadain provences, under the command of Gen. Philip Schuyler. Second in command of this force was their brother-in-law, Gen. Richard Montgomery who died as a result of wounds received at the battle for Quebec. John returned h me at some point, I'm not sure when, but later volunteered again on July 14, 1777 at Fort Edward, N.Y. He returned to Clermont and resigned his commission in August 1777, after Gen. Schuyler was relieved of the Northern N.Y. command. Henry Beekman Living ton rose to the rank of colonel and participated in many campaigns before resigning his commission on Jan.13, 1779.

Col. Joanthan Eddy led the American attack on fort Cumberland in Nova Scotia. He was born in Mansfield MS in 1727. During th eFrench and Indain War he held the rank of Capt, and was stationed at Fort Cumberland NS. He later settled there with his family and became active in NS politics, he was a member of the NS General Assembly and Sheriff. In, 1776 when the American Revolution began he took up the cause leading the Eddy Rebellion aganist the Brits. He tarveled to MA where he met with General Washingt n asking for 600 men and supplies to invade Nova Scotia. Washington wrote congress and they refused. He then went to Philidelipha to ask congress himself and was again refused. Congress did not want to expand the war with so little resources. He then was ppointed and supplied to a small extent by the Ma. General Assembly to lunch an attack on Nova Scotia. The attack on Fort Cumberland failed but he did capture a 100 ton ship and send sorely needed supplies to Boston. All of the Col. sons also fought in the war- Jonathan, Ibrook, Elisa and William. Previous family research has indicated the name Francis and David for this soldier, so his first name may be one or the other or a combination of both. He is of Scottish ancestry and married a woman with the last name METTLER. Unsubstantiated family his ory indicates that he came to Canada as a United Empire Loyalist. The family settled in Humberstone Twp, Welland County, Ontario where Francis/David died in 1812. His children were: Annie (married Jehoidra Schooley), Elizabeth (married Samuel Furry), rancis, Katharine (married Thomas Dyer), Margaret (married John Cherry), Mary (married John Dennis and remained in Welland County), Peter, William, John (married Margaret Beech and moved to Poplar Hill, Lobo Twp, Middlesex County, Ontario), Daniel (marrie Christianne Remy/Ramey and moved to Brantford & South Dumfries Twps, Brant County, Ontario) and Philip (married Catharine Beech - sister of Margaret above - and moved to Delaware Twp, Middlesex County, Ontario). Matin was born in Fayette County, PA in 1756 and died in Rypley County, Indiana in 184 . Emma Overturf's son, my father, was BGen. Kenneth N. Walker, USAF, air power pioneer who commanded the Fifth Bomber Command in Australia, was lost on an air raid over Rabaul, New Britain in January 1943. Awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Timothy Shay is listed in the DAR Patriot Index as follows: SHAY, Timothy, b. 10-26-1756 d. 7--1837 m (1) Mary Drake (2) Mary (Rubart) Emery PVT CT. Our family "story" is that he served from May 11, 1775 to December 15, 1775. Looking for anyone who an help me further document his service ie. company or unit. This Timothy Shay is sited in History of Sussex & Warren Counties, New Jersey...compiled by James P. Snell...1881... "Timothy Shay came from Virginia to the township (Sandyston) during the war f the Revolution having purchased a farm in the north portion of the township, now occupied by Jeptha C. Shay. The family of Mr. Shay was extensive, many of his children having chosen homes in the township. One son, David, served in the war of 1812, and fell a victim to fever contracted at that time. Joshia, Ephraim and John died in Sandyston and left descendants, who are still residents of the township. The son of the first is Jeptha; the children of Ephraim are Timothy E., Theodore, and Joshua; while John has two daughters and one son."

Moses Camp wintered at Valley Vorge and fought in the battle of Trenton. There is a powder horn in the musuem at Valley Vorge w/ his name carved in it. He is a matrilineal ancestor of mine. I am doing further research based on my mother's DAR papers I would be happy to give/receive information from family members.

Benjamin Carroll was drafted into the Militia in Orange Co., NC initially for a period of three months. He served under a Capt. Etheldaid Jones of Wake Co, NC and a LT.Trent. He served in several skirmshes in the area of Salisbury, NC and later served u der General Green. He later served an additional term in the Army. He applied for a service pension in 1833. He died In Orange Co. NC on Jan 31, 1846 at the age of 92.

Enlisted as an express rider at the age of 12years and served under Colonel Udney Hay at washingtons Hdqts at Fishkill. He rode to Danbury, connecticut and was a night guide to General LaFayette and General Rochambeau. He took dispatches from commanding o ficers to the state lines where he gave them to Sheldons Dragoons to deliver to Washington. His pension was allowed in 1832 for service as a private but was later increased as it was contended that the law entitled an express rider to the title and pensio of a Captain.

Born about 1733 in Gloucester County, NJ from a family that had been active politically since 1692, Josiah Hillman served on the committee to elect the NJ delegates to the 1st Continental Congress in Philadelphia in 1775. On July 16, 1776 he was commissio ed as Lt. Colonel of the NJ State troops, and his batallion was the one that tricked Hessian Col. Dunop and his troops away from Trenton so that General Washington could capture the city on Dec 24th, 1776. Lt. Col. Hillman fought throughout the war, his m liltary record showing him at the battles of: Princton, Monmouth, Trenton, Morristown, Long Island, and White Plains, as well as a number of smaller battles. In 1777 he was commissioned to build and defend the redoubt at Billingsport on the Delaware River below Philadelphia. His eldest son, Joseph Pancoast Hillman, was a drummer boy in October 1776. Lt. Colonal Josiah Hillman lived to see his country achieve the goal of independance. He died about 1792 in Gloucester County, NJ, and a memorial to him and h s son was placed in the Old Presbyterian Burial Ground in Woodbury, NJ in 1999.

Claim S 12713 in DAR pension list. Married to Esther Fuller, had nine children. D. 11 Aug 1832, B. 14 APR 1752. Seeking more on his service history.
