Even years after their breakup, the popularity of the Grateful Dead remains strong. Kids who never had the chance to experience them live are dedicated deadheads. The music, the scene, the ideals all come into play...
The first time I saw the Dead was in 1973. My friend Jim and I had been hearing new reports about a big outdoor show with the Grateful Dead, the Band and the Allman Brothers coming downstate, close to 100,000 people expected... We had to be part of this!
My parents let me go because I was going with my supervisor from work, who was all of 18. So we decended along what looked like the rest of humanity upon unsuspecting Watkins Glen, N.Y.
We had to park eight friggin' miles away and walk in because of the traffic. In one small town we walked thru the heads had cleaned out every bit of food from a small mom and pop store. The locals seemed pretty good natured about the whole thing considering what they must of
thought to be an invasion.
We got to the speedway about mid-morning and it was an amazing sight. Something like 600,000 people were here. As far as you could see in every direction nothing but freaks. The Grateful Dead opened the show and played for over five hours. The sun baked down on us. Sky divers floated over us. Bliss...
