| Deadbeat Dad Convicted By Federal Jury, Reports U.S. Attorney
BOSTON, June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- A Caracas, Venezuela man was convicted in federal court in connection with failure to pay child support. United States Attorney Donald K. Stern announced that a federal jury sitting before Chief U.S. District Court Judge William G.. Young returned a guilty verdict today against DAVID A.A. SMITH, age 47, for willfully failing to pay a legal child support obligation under the new felony provisions of the federal Child Support Recovery Act. SMITH, who is a U.S. citizen, has been residing in Caracas, Venezuela since 1996. SMITH, an international bookseller, was indicted in December of last year with owing more than $26,000 in back child support for his minor daughter who resides in Malden, Massachusetts. SMITH was arrested on November 11, 1999, at Miami International Airport on a federal criminal complaint, when he attempted to enter the United States from Venezuela. Chief Judge Young scheduled sentencing for September 19, 2000 at 2:00pm. SMITH faces a maximum penalty of two years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and mandatory restitution in an amount equal to the total unpaid support obligation that exists at the time of sentencing. The case was investigated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General, Office of Investigations, and the Massachusetts Department of Revenue, Child Support Enforcement. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Antoinette E.M. Leoney of Stern's Major Crimes Unit.
