ACPC

The Association for the Conservation of the Cutivireni Patrimony - ACPC, is a non governmental, non profit Peruvian organisation, founded on September 3rd, 1987 and inscribed in the register of the Ministry of Agriculture of Peru, registration Nš 488-AG-DGFFS-SDAF. ACPC is comprised of voluntary personnel residing in Lima, members of the Ashaninka from the communities of the Ene and Tambo valleys and scientific and technical support of national and foreign professionals specializing in various fields. The Association is inscribed and recognised by the Secretary of International Technical Co-operation (SECTI) - Resolution Nš 089-2000/PCM.

The primary objective of ACPC is the conservation of the natural and cultural heritage of the Ashaninka communities established in the northern area of the Vilcabamba mountain range, in particular the basins of the Ene, Tambo and Bajo Urubamba rivers. The priority of ACPC has been, and is, to support the Ashaninka: strengthening their communities, helping them achieve fair participation in the economic and social life of the country and assisting them in protecting and maintaining their cultural values. The native cultures deserve our respect. They have successfully maintained the fragile balance that has allowed them and nature to survive in harmony. ACPC has always worked with these principles at heart and has a firm commitment to continue in this way.

The Ashaninka

The Ashaninka natives are the second largest ethnic group in the Peruvian Amazonia, their ancestral lands are in the forests of Junin, Pasco, Huanuco and part of Ucayali. Fifteen Ashaninka communities in the Ene River Valley, in the District of Pangoa, have legal recognition and property titles for an area of over 200.000 hectares. These communities number over 4.000 people, most of whom do not speak Spanish. In the Tambo River District there are 32 communities numbering over 6,500 people. The communities are represented by the following bodies: Ashaninka Central – Ene River (CARE) and Ashaninka Central -Tambo's River (CART).

During the last decade the Ashaninka suffered terribly at the hands of Shining Path (a maoist Terrorist group) who committed, against them, one of the most abhorrent genocides in the modern history of Latin America. The survival of the Ashaninka and their environment, as well as their highly developed knowledge of the Amazonian forest is in serious danger: the presence of terrorist/drug traffickers, the appropriation of their lands for Coca plantations, immigrants from the highlands in search of fresh agricultural lands, and religious missionary sects.
