Don't Look In My Fridge!

Talk Soup Host Hal Sparks on broccoli, brie and some tough breaks

What do you recall being in the refrigerator from your childhood?

Honestly, I grew up Appalachia poor in Kentucky. There was an old glass bottle filled with water from the creek that we boiled. And there was usually Mountain Dew and some frozen venison. That was pretty much it. Thankfully my fridge has come a long way since then.

No joke. For a bachelor you've got lots of healthy items. Give us an inventory.

I have a carton of tofu, four or five Balance drinks, two Hanson's Energy Drinks, two all-natural ginger ales, half a dozen organic eggs, two yams and a head of broccoli. When you're exposed to talk shows on a daily basis like I am, one must counteract their effect with something-- anything-- healthy.

It's an impressive list. But is there anything that's not so good for you in there?

There's some leftover Chinese food in a little white carton and a half-eaten chunk of brie from several weeks ago. I don't really know enough about brie to know when to throw it out, but I'm not brave enough to try it now. So it's just hanging out in there until I make a decision.

You could just forget about it and discover it later in an altered state.

That has happened before. The worst example was a Tupperware container that I forgot all about. The contents of that are still a mystery to me. I don't remember it being liquid when I put it in there.

Do you have any other surprises being kept in cold storage you'd care to share?

Yes, there's a box of assorted chocolates from Valentine's Day in the freezer that I should've tossed out immediately. But sometimes I like frozen chocolates, (which can be) dangerous because you don't know how each one is going to freeze. You can bite right through some, and others crack right in half, but some have the density of a lump of coal filled with gummy bears. If my jaw is broken when you read this, it's because my life is a box of chocolates.
