Medal of Honor: Allied Assault

by Griff Rees

Medal of Honor: Allied assault is the newest fps from EA games. With tantalizing game play, detailed graphics, and great sound; MOHAA is one of the best games of the year.

Gameplay

The game play in MOHAA is second to none. All the single player missions feel like you are actually in WWII. The missions range from sabotage, to hostage rescue, to escorts. All of the levels are impressive, one of the most being Omaha Beach on D-Day. There isn’t anything much more fun than lobbing grenades into those damn Nazi bunkers. Some people may complain that Omaha Beach looks a lot like the opening from Saving Private Ryan. So before you start slamming this level just remember Steven Spielberg created it, he can’t rip off his own movie. Thought so. One thing I hate about this game is the enemy AI. It is way to sensitive. In the words of Tal Belvins, esteemed IGN writer, “Sadly the enemies are much too aware of their surroundings then they ought to be. They’ll zero in and put three bullets in your head before you even see them.” EA better make a patch. The weapons in the game are, of course, historically accurate and there are very many of them. One thing I absolutely hate in this game is that every time you get hit your screen turns red and the screen jerks upwards. That makes it very hard to get a shot off while you’re under a hail of machine gun fire.

The online multiplayer in MOHAA is pretty good to. It’s no Quake Arena, but that’s expected.

Visual

Graphics in this game are exquisite. With awesome particle effects and detailed landscapes, MOHAA really shines. The barrels even actually have volume. This really impressed me. Maybe 2015 just got bored. All the weapons/tanks/jeeps/landing craft/buildings look great. The feeling this game really engulfs you. One downside is that it uses the same engine as Jedi Knight 2 and the faces on people look pretty funny.

Cinematics

All the cinematics in MOHAA are flowing. Meaning that gameplay is interrupted by cut scenes that tie into the action. On of the most amazing cut scenes is the opening to Omaha Beach. You start in a landing craft waiting to deploy to the beach. As you go mortars hit the water sending up huge waves. As you look (you can look, not move) you can see landing crafts to your side. After a minute of hearing orders and being splashed an explosion goes off next to you. The landing craft next to you blew up, sending soldier flying and a wave tipping you side ways. As the cut scene ends, the landing ramp comes down and you’re an Omaha Beach. This is one of the most impressive cut scenes I’ve ever seen.

Lasting Appeal

MOHAA is one of my favorite games. I play it fairly often and recommend it to all of my friends, as I do to you.

Sound

MOHAA’s sound is alright. Often during gameplay the guns loose their sound and there isn’t too much music. This would add nicely to the stunning graphics. But when the guns are working and the music is rollin’ then the sound is great.

Controls

MOHAA uses the tested and true WADS/ mouse interface that provide the greatest control in most fps games. As far as hot keys and the mouse wheel go I’m not that pleased. Its pretty hard to choose the right weapon for the job.
