Detroit
Acquires Schneider from L.A.
by
AmericaJR
The
Red Wings got Mathieu Schneider from the Los Angles Kings on Tuesday
during a trade for Sean Avery and Maxim Kuznetsov.
Schneider
will add to the defense of the Red Wings on the way to another Stanley
Cup this year. He said, "I'm very excited to get the chance
to win the Stanley Cup." Schneider adds, "And if
there was one team I wanted to go to it was the Detroit Red Wings."
He
was on the Montreal Canadiens when they won the Stanley Cup back
in 1992-93. This season, he will be making $3.5 million with the
Red Wings. During this season with the L.A. Kings, he scored 14
goals and was ranked second on their team. This will be his 6th
different team to play for on the NHL.
Red
Wings general manager Ken Holland said, "I call him a top-four
defenseman." He adds, "He can play minutes. He
averages 22 minutes with L.A. He plays in every situation."
Red Wings assistant GM Jim Nill considers Schneider, "He's
a puck-moving defenseman, and he fits into the type of game we play."
Schneider
expects an easy transition moving to the Red Wings. He said, "A
veteran hockey team. I think it'll be a good transition."
Schneider adds, "They do a lot of the things that I do well,
like move the puck." In addition, he predicts, "I'd
like to be able to bring the same things I've done in L.A. I try
to play a solid two-way game: offense and defense."
Mathieu
Schneider is 33 years old. He has played for the New York Islanders,
Toronto, New York Rangers and the Los Angeles Kings. Most recently,
he scored in the hockey game against Detroit.
