An
Interesting Training Camp?
by
Steve Gralewski
The Midnight
deadline Monday was quite active for Detroit. They signed
potential unrestricted free agents Darren McCarty, who signed an
8.7 Million dollar four-year contract, and Jason Woolley, who signed
on to a two-year contract worth around $1.25 Million per year.
McCarty and Woolley are the first two of five prominent unrestricted
free agents to be re-signed by the club. Another, captain Steve
Yzerman, is expected to sign a one-year deal later this summer.
Sergei Fedorov and Igor Larionov are expected to test the market.
Another big announcement that came earlier was when General Manager
Ken Holland announced Monday that the Red Wings have retained the
rights to goaltender Dominik Hasek for the 2003-04 season.
This means that Dominik will be back on the team, however the problem
is we have over $16 Million worth of goaltending. The
New York Rangers had traded Brian Leetch to the Edmonton Oilers
for a back-up goaltender, to presumably make room for Curtis Joseph's
salary.
No other information is available on Sergei Federov, Igor Larionov,
Steve Yzerman, Dominik Hasek, or Curtis Joseph. We will have
to play the old game of "Sit-and-wait".
