Latin Forum
The pages in this section are devoted to the world's favourite dead language,
Latin. The language first emerged in the region around modern-day Lazio in
Italy, from which the name of the language is derived. At the height of the
Roman Empire, the language could be heard in places such as Alsatia (Alsace),
Caletum (Calais), Londinium (London) and Durocortorum (Rheims). After the
demise of the Roman Empire and invasions by the Angles, the Saxons and the
Vikings, the use of the language began to decline. However, Latin still has its
uses today, especially in the sciences. Bookshops continue to sell huge volumes
of Latin dictionaries and grammar books. Famous Latin speakers include Julius
Caesar and Nero, the great fiddler.
