Extending Tube Time
Pulling into a tube is one of the greatest aspects of bodyboarding.
Getting the most out of riding deep inside the barrel come only with
years of experience. Still, here are a few points that can help extend
your tube time.
Every tube has a different lip arc which varies with speed. The falling
lip holds the majority of lip power and should be avoided whenever
possible.
Once you take off on a wave and slide into position
with the lip curtain overhead, always stay focused on where and what
the wave is doing up ahead.
Next you should concentrate on your speed. You need
just enough momentum so that you are in control. If the barrel is
steep and fast, arching your back and moving your body forwards towards
the nose will increase your speed. On the other hand, if you need to
reduce momentum, drag your legs or pull up on the nose, creating a
gradual stall.
As the lip hits, a whitewater explosion know as the
shockwave creates turbulence that should be avoided because of its
unpredictability.
The thicker the lip, the bigger the shockwave. Waves
tend to get sucked up the face. Some riders use shockwave to generate
more speed by riding close to the lip explosion to make deep barrels.
To get deeper than you have ever dreamed possible
and still make it out, you need to have deep concentration and feel
comfortable about your surroundings.
Experience and plenty of practises is that makes a
good tube rider. Although tube don't last all that long, the joy you
get from an extremely deep tube ride can last forever.
