Clues to Coming Events

One thing that makes this series so compelling is that the individual books are so intertwined. There are clues in each that predict events in subsequent parts. A comment in the 2nd book that the Losadunai have not had many visitors from the East turns out to predict 10 very exciting chapters in the 4th book. The details, however, could never be guessed.

This section is a collection of clues quoted from the first four books and is intended to be used as a reference when discussing the meanings and significance of the story line.

There are several discussion boards where excellent points and counterpoints are posted - such as The AuelBoard and The Jean Auel Message Board. Anyone who believes that a specific sentence may foretell a future event is encouraged to include it in the guestbook.

Here are a couple examples:

  1. What is happening to Durc and other members of his Clan? Two clues from the 1st book are illustrated below.
    • Chap 13. After Ayla saves Ona from drowning, Aga says if she has another daughter, Droog will name her Ayla.
    • Chap 28. Goov curses Ayla, as he was ordered, but then turns his back to Broud.
Broud may not be leader for long.

  2. What is happening to Ayla and Jondalar in the Ninth Cave of the Zelandonii? During one of the many interviews with Jean Auel when the 4th book was released, one statement she made remains in my memory. She disclosed that Ayla would live to be 42 years old. Since she is about 18 when they reach the Zelandonii cave, I would look for the 5th book to cover up to perhaps 20 years. Obviously, there will be cultural clashes, but there are indications the Zelandonii can learn. Trading can be established with Guban's cave. Danug from the Mamutoi will visit.

The 6th book will probably tie up some loose ends. We may learn about Ayla's birth family. We know the Clan will die, since there are no Neanderthals today. This may be linked to the spirits that were not taken from Ayla, the medicine woman, when she was cursed with death. This point is brought up many times in books 2, 3 & 4. Her death could be in the collapse of the Ninth cave, also the home of the Clan. There are many references to Ayla's fear of being buried.

I do not want to continue to speculate here - I will see you on the message boards for that! But, please try to notice those lines that stand out as you re-re-read the four books during the long wait. Perhaps, with them collected in one spot, more material will be available for our discussions.
