The First Trimester
Here we are.  Wow...the first trimester!  Now we wait to see if Carole will exhibit the classic signs of pregnancy.  You know...the pleasant morning sickness!!  I found out early that the term "morning sickness" is a bit of a misnomer.  It doesn't mean that you feel nauseous in the morning only.  It means that you could feel nauseous from the moment you wake up in the morning until you fall asleep that night!!

Carole threw up EVERY DAY of her first pregnancy.  Believe it or not, the last time was AFTER Amanda was born and Carole was in recovery.  When I had heard that, I thought "Why in the @#$% would anyone want to do that to themselves again....ON PURPOSE??"  I must be a pretty great guy for her to put herself willingly through that again.

Carole soon had her first "pregnant" doctors appointment.  The morning sickness had already kicked in and she was dreading the next 9 months.  It was at this appointment that she found out they have pills for morning sickness.  At first she thought it was great...then paused and was a bit disturbed that her doctors during her first pregnancy failed to let her even know they existed!!  At any rate, she was able to get her "happy pills" as she calls them now.  The pills are called "Diclectin".  They are a combination sedative-antihistamine, doxylamine, and vitamin B6.  The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto has deemed this safe and that was good enough for us.  If you want to read more about it, check out  this link that explains the testing that has been done to deem this drug safe.  This drug was available in the States under the name Bendectin.  This was voluntarily removed from the market by the drug manufacturer because of litigation against them.  The FDA did NOT say they had to remove it.  The company couldn't afford the expenses of the law suits.

This is our first ultrasound of baby T. taken at about 6 weeks (July 23, 2001).  At this time the size is only 2.4mm.  I can still remember as soon as I saw it, a grin widened across my face.  This was the first real "reality check" of it all.  I could physically see the beginnings of our baby.  Our happiness soon changed to concern after Carole went back to the Doctor.  She started out the appointment by saying "So, do you still feel pregnant?"  That put some fear into us!!  Fetal heartrates are supposed to be between 120 and 160 to be in the "normal" range.  The heart rate recorded at the time of the first ultrasound was only 92.  The doctor ordered another ultrasound and we had to wait until August 3rd.

We were dreading the next ultrasound appointment, but of course we had to find out one way or the other what was happening.  These are ultrasound pictures taken on August 3, 2001 (7 weeks, 3 days).  We were elated to hear a strong heartbeat at 140!!  In just 11 days, our baby had grown from 2.4mm to 8.8mm.  Everything this time around was normal.  After some digging online, we found an interesting article on  fetal heatrates .  It said that baby's heartrate will start out the same as mom's, and will increase by 3 beats per minute per day.  When we did the math, it turned out that by the time our second ultrasound came along, the heartrate would be at...you guessed it....140!!  Why couldn't we have found this out BEFORE?  Oh well, all turned out well.

Carole, along with her "happy pills" has been feeling a little sick, but it's not nearly as bad as her first pregnancy.  She even manages a few really good days where she feels great.  She now exhibits a strange sudden onset of spontaneous gagging.  We'll be sitting and talking to eachother when all of the sudden she gags!  She hasn't been sick to her stomach, but those gags tell her to eat something...and quick!  We are now at 13 weeks...rapidly approaching the second trimester.  Our family and friends now know about our news and are almost as happy and excited as Carole and I are.

The happy pills seemed to be working so well and Carole was feeling great that she decided to see if she could do without them.  We were camping up north in August when this revelation hit her.  I looked at her and said "Are you sure you want to be trying that up here?".  She said that she's been feeling really good, so I gave a tentative sounding "OK".  Well, a few hours after that she was throwing up in the woods, and on the way home that same day, lets just say that we had to stop when Carole felt the need to fill a toilet at a gas station with the contents of her stomach.  After she was done and we were back on the road, through her booming headache she said "Well, I wont try THAT again!!"

We have been kicking around names...and after a long process of just naming names, and looking on the web, we have come down to the following ones.  If it's a girl, her name will be Sydney.  If it's a boy, we are thinking of either Alexander or Nicholas.  If you have any comments about this...click on the email link on the front page and let us know what you think!!
