The Ap5 and Ap6 Valiants

"Valiant has the power to please. The fact that Valiant with its 225 CUI. "Slant Six" engine is the only car in its class to give you the full measure of power you really need, is but the beginning of the Valiant story of better value." The Ap5 and Ap6 were made from 1963 - 1965. Why does it start at 5? well.. This it because the models before this weren't Valiants, they were Chrysler Royals.

Ap5:

1964 Ap5 V8

Released in 1963 there were a total of 49 440 of these made and the australian built content of the new Valiant rose to around 60% though engines were still imported. This model still had the smae suspension and mechanical workings as in the S and R series. These came in one of a 4 door sedan (standard or the new Regal) or 4 door station wagon (standard or Regal).

Engine options was one of a 225 slant (3.7L) with a single downdraft carb, with a compression ratio of 8.2:1 or a 273 V8 (4.5L) with a Carter 2 barrel downdraft carb and a compression ratio of 8.8:1. Linked with one of a 3 speed TorqueFlite pushbutton auto (1st - 2.45:1; 2nd - 1.45:1, 3rd - 1.100:1; Reverse - 2.2:1) or a 3 speed manual (not available on V8 or regal models) (1st - 2.95:1; 2nd - 1.83:1; 3rd - 1.00:1; Reverse - 3:80:1). The rear axle ratios were 3.23:1

New Models: The Valiant Regal, released by Chrysler to compete with GM's Premier and Fords Falcon Futura. The more luxurious Regal had more body decorations than the standard Valiant models, better seats with arm rests front and back, heaters, demisters, interior carpets and a two tone steering wheel.

Valiant Safari Station wagon, the same as the sedan mechanically with the same front end body styling, wind up rear window, a large rear luggage spacing and a low level tailgate.

Ap6:


1966 Ap6 Regal

Released in 1965 there were 43 344 built. They were basically the same as its predecessor but with a grill facelift, the V8 engine was introduced into the Regal range, the Wayfarer utility was introduced, auto transmission shifter was moved to the steering wheel for easier access, the camshaft for the slant six was improved to give more torque, acrylic enamel paint was used (it was the best paint at the time), metallic paint was used in some models, self adjusting brakes introduced, Australian built content of the car was about 65%-70%. The Ap6 cane in a 4 door sedan (standard and regal (now including the V8)), 4 door station wagon (standard or Regal) or a 2 door utility (Ute).

Engine options were the same as the Ap5 except that the V8 was now available in the Regal models. Transmission was a 3 speed manual (same ratios as the Ap5's), 3 speed TorqueFlite auto (column shifted) or a 3 speed TorqueFlite 8 auto (console shifted). Axel ratio was 3.23:1.

New Models:Regal V8 with the 273 slant (same engine as what was used in the American Plymouth Barracuda) US-built engine developing 135kW (180bhp) and producing 352.6Nm (260lb/ft) of torque - top speed of 175 km/h (109mph) the new Regal provided more power in the luxury sedan. A vynal coloured roof was standard on thge sedan and the wagon had roof racks.

Wayfarer Utility, available in auto or manual, tonneau cover came standard.
