HISTORY

The BAY AREA SPORTFISHERS was originally organized for Hewlett Packard employees and their families but was also open to anyone who was interested in the sport of fishing. The Hewlett Packard Sportfishers club was formed in 1972 by a number of "fish-minded" HP employees at the Santa Clara Division. As of April 1, 2001, the Club was required to reorganize due to the new HP Corporate Club Guidelines requiring the membership of any HP club to be 100% Hewlett Packard employees. We still have a few charter and retired members but also have a diverse membership from other sources.

The BAY AREA SPORTFISHERS is a service organization that annually hosts children for the South Bay Fishing in the City event, a program to teach inner-city youth ecology, biology, conservation and how to fish, jointly sponsored with the Department of Fish and Game, County of Santa Clara and City of San Jose; Cosponsor for the San Francisco Boat Show Kid's Pond; Hosts a fishout to Del Valle Reservoir for children from the Friends on the Outside, a United Way Agency; Sponsor of a trip to the cement boat in Santa Cruz for the Japanese Senior Center in San Jose and other various community activities throughout the year.

The BAY AREA SPORTFISHERS strive to foster and maintain a high standard of sportsmanship. Scheduled monthly fishing and picnicking activities provide a wide assortment of fun for the experienced fisherperson, "first timers" and Families. Here's your opportunity to develop recreational fishing skills and to share fishing knowledge with others in an informal social atmosphere.

The BAY AREA SPORTFISHERS meet the second Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. at IHOP, 5403 Stevens Creek Blvd., Santa Clara, CA 95050 (phone 408-732-9614 to verify location). Annual Membership fee (per family) is $12.00 with a one-time-only initiation fee of $5.00.
