overview |
Formed in 1891 by ten clubs, research by Gordon
Baird reveals that Cowdenbeath left in March 1892 after completing just six
fixtures. After Raith Rovers had won
the first championship, the league was officially dissolved, but
reconstituted as a new league, but without the champions. Clackmannan also
left but King’s Park, formerly of the Scottish Alliance, joined, and promptly
won, the eight team league. The
collapse of the Scottish Federation in 1893 saw East Stirlingshire and
Falkirk enter and both were to win the title in the following two seasons.
They, and Stenhousemuir who won the league in 1896, then moved on to help
form the stronger Scottish Combination. The Midland League lasted for
six seasons in total, but was superseded by the creation of the Central
Combination which included four of the Midland League clubs. |
