Things To Concider:
One thing you must know is that windmills is all about technique and physics. There is no strength involved and close to no energy required when you have them, it is all momentum. Now as for the physics aspect. A common problem and natural reaction is to close your legs, under any circumstance DO NOT CLOSE YOUR LEGS, keep your legs spread at all times no matter what happens. I'm just going to say this, if you close your legs, you will crash and burn. If your wondering why your smashing your hip then this is why. If it takes slamming into the ground 20 times for you to realize your problem then so be it, I am just warning you in advance, do not close the legs.
Expect to get injuries when learning mills,
-Bruising of the hip
-Sore Wrist
-Bruised/Sore shoulder
-Sore hip from stabbing
-Rug Burns if milling on carpet
-Bruised/Possible fracture of the knee
The Colapse:
First of all I have seen a lot of bboys and bgirls trying to mill and the only thing holding them back is they do not know how to colapse properly. It is very simple but trying to picture it just by reading a guide that tells you to colapse is very hard, doing it is harder. Look at the animation below and watch carefully so you can see exactly how to colapse your left arm. It is very simple.
It's basically just balancing on the supporting arm and pushing backwards so your arm folds up underneath you, This is called a COLAPSE.
The First Rotation:
1. First you must get into the starting position as seen above. Basically you have your left elbow stabbed in your hip/gut. Your right arm is just a bit in front of to the right side of yout body.
2. It doesn't matter exactly where your right arm is, as long as it is on the ground and you are in a comfortable position.
1. Lean forward a tad a lift your legs off the ground so your body is now being supported by your left arm. From this position you should go right on to your first kick
TIP: Your right arm will help with balance but you wont be in this position for long.
1. This is kick #1, Swing your right leg back and up as high as you can, at the same time push backwards and colapse your left arm.
2. Lift your right leg so high that you start to feel yourself start to turn over towards your back, it will also tug on your left leg, when it does, initiate kick #2
1. This is kick #2, What you want to do is try and kick your left leg towards your right arm face. You will start to roll onto your back
2. Hold your right leg up in the air when you are kicking your left leg under, remember to keep the legs spread.
1. Now that you are beginning to roll over you may have to help and push with your right arm to help yourself roll onto your back.
1. When you get to the back congradulations, you are on your way but you are not finished quite yet. You must get ready for the next stab.
1. Now you want to get your left arm stabbed in your gut again and while you are kicking your right leg, begin to reach for the ground but keep it glued in your gut. As for your right arm, it should be tucked against your chest so you can get ready because you will be rolling over it.
2. This will sound weird but when you are on your back, your next kick will be your right leg, but what you want to try and do is kick it down towards the ground, Don't worry it will not hit the ground, it will just swing around. Follow to red line to see exactly where your leg will be travelling.
1. Notice how the right leg is close to the ground, It is not touching it even though it was kicked towards the ground, It will swing in a circular motion. Also notice the left arm as it is getting ready for the stab. Keep the right arm tucked up to your chest.
1. This is where your left hand makes contact with the ground, It will also be attatched to the hip, this is what keeps your hip up high enough for you to link your mills, As your technique improves you will find yourself stabbing less and soon going to no handed as you get better.
1. This is like when we started except now we aren't starting the mill because the legs are already moving, just keep them moving. We are now back to kick #1, swing your right leg up towards the sky as high as you can, the harder you swing it the better.
1. Once your right leg is up in the air, hold it there as you go to link. This is the hardest part, whatever you do, don't stop moving, just keep the mill going, After you swing that right leg up, swing your left leg towards the ground and around towards your face. It is the same kick as before.
2. Notice the left arm keeps the hips up and see how the right arm is still tucked underneath.
1. Colapse your arm as you swing your left leg under, just like before.
1. When you do swing your left leg you will notice that your right leg is pulled with it, Just begin your 2nd kick when you feel the pull/drop.
1. Continue to kick and repeat everything over and over to get windmills.
NO HANDERS:
No handed mills are a pretty big step and require good form and technique so make sure you can do very good windmills with straight legs. For no handers first try rolling over your forearms. What you gotta do is instead of stabing lean heavily onto your forarms and push off using your forearms. You really have to think about your legs this time, Keep them spread and kick just like before but a bit harder and when you kick your right leg back, kick it hard and kick your left leg under towards your head. Now here is the problem, this is a continuous motion, there are no pauses like the above mill. Meaning the above can go: kick, hold, kick, kick, hold, kick, hold, kick. When you go to your forearms there are no holds, It goes kick, kick, kick, kick. As soon as your done one kick you gotta move on to the next one right away, you don't have time to think, you just have to do it. When you learn them this way then you are doing well. It will look a lot nicer and smoother as well because there are no pauses in between.
Pro Style:
Okay, this is the final step. After you learn how to roll off your forearms you have to learn to skip that so you can mill on one spot and it will look a lot nicer and faster. I did not make an animation of these mills but I will soon. What you have to do is really use the hips and upper body with pro style, This way your right leg gets whiped out to the side and up so you rotate quickly. Now you are going to be kicking the same as before, but when you go to go onto your forearms, spin your upper body, meaning turn hard so you are facing your right and just follow through with your left leg, When you get going, say about the second rotation you will not need to kick at all, just spin your upper body and begin to torque your hips when you spin your upper body and not only will you mill on one spot but you will speed up your mills and they will look very nice and they will be pro style with practice. If you want supper fast mills your gonna have to learn to spin your upper body with your head on the ground so you can spin over your head. The next step when you get a pro style technique is to apply that technique and start variations, first start with genies with the arms crossed over the chest, then nutcrackers, handcuffs, supperman, halos, airmills. Try all the variations, pass the hat where you strip or remove a hat or something. GOOD LUCK!
I hope this guide has helped you all. Peace
