The Brooklyn Greens are active on many issues: * Fighting against mass pesticide spraying We were instrumental in forming the No Spray Coalition, which is a multi-organizational group that has led the fight against pesticide spraying in New York City and elsewhere. * Returning WBAI to community control, and opposing the corporate takeover of the Pacifica Radio network We are involved in a variety of actions in support of WBAI's historic mission to report uncensored news and have began a campaign demanding Pacifica board member Andrea Cisco, a resident of Brooklyn, resign. This includes demonstrations in front of her residence as part of the "Adopt A Board Member" campaign. * Supporting the Sixth Street Community Center CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) The CSA is a plan where a farmer agrees to grow organically in exchange for a firm market for his or her produce. Sixth Street has an agreement with a farmer in rural Sussex County, N.J. CSAs provide healthy food for city residents and support for small farms. Sixth Street CSA is adding a fruit farmer and a certified organic fishery in Alaska. Members can join the Sixth Street CSA from anywhere in the area. For more information on the CSA, email sixthstreet@mindspring.com. * Ending the Rockefeller Drug Laws Working with dedicated Greens from across the state, we have long worked to end the draconian laws that serve only to fill jails to create jobs and profits for others, primarily on the backs of communities of color. * Seeking freedom for political prisoners Mumia Abu-Jamal and Leonard Peltier We have raised the cause of Mr. Abu-Jamal and Mr. Peltier in a variety of forums. Some of our members have been arrested for civil disobedience in support of Mr. Abu-Jamal, including at the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia and on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington. * Opposing genetic engineering of foods We have been active in the fight against rBGH milk and against genetic engineering. * Ending the sanctions against Iraq More than 1.5 million Iraqi children have died as a result of the sanctions against Iraq, and this is an outrage we are determined to see end as soon as possible. * Opposing U.S. imperialism Although the members of the Brooklyn Greens adhere to a variety of political tendencies and have differing political orientations, we are united in opposition to imperialism. We helped organize forums against the U.S.-led NATO bombardment of Yugoslavia, marched in demonstrations and spoke out against NATO's killing of civilians and NATO's intentional destruction of the environment. One of our members also recently completed a week-long fast in support of the Palestinian people. * Waste management/waterfront development We are working with other community groups in opposing the building of more waste facilities on the already overburdened Brooklyn waterfront and in creating waterfront access. * GreenVision television A weekly cable-television program that focuses on environmental issues. GreenVision is shown every Friday at 6:30 p.m. on BCAT (Brooklyn Cable Access Television). * G, The Chronicle of the New York State Greens/Green Party of New York State G, which has contributors from around the state, prints articles and commentary on Green political candidates, on activism carried out by Greens, and on social, economic and other issues. The editor, art director and two regular reporters for the party newspaper are Brooklyn Greens. * Contesting elections Brooklyn Greens have run for offices from local office to state attorney general. We have also assisted in races for many Green candidates, including the Al Lewis runs for governor and senator, and Ralph Nader's presidential campaign. |
