| Early 2000,
Provincial New Zealand, Napier, Matthew met Dwayne and Nick through a mutual friend and
they decided to start a band. It didn't really work and Matthew went back to dealing books
and looking after his menagerie. Dwayne and Nick eventually started something else with
Mike who they met through the same friend that had introduced Matt. All three musicians
were united in an effort to play something different than the distorted barrage of rock
that generally plagues the rest of New Zealand. Something with groove, something with
melody, something with space and ambience. Further down the line, early 2001,
Matthew hooked up with the guys to record some of their songs and consequently he imposed
himself in the band, convincing them they needed keys and samples. Soon after the name
Catch Penny was conjured and Mike found Johnny who was quickly induced into the Penny
fold. Starting out with a lounge/Dub sound Catch Penny are currently pushing their music
in new directions, experimenting with new instruments and sonic variations. November
2001, after finishing recording his parts on Catchpenny's debut EP , Matthew left the band
to pursue a career in prison. Dwayne's cousin Amy Blue has subsequently filled in on keys
for recent gigs.
