| Located in historic Clinton, Louisiana, Clinton Confederate Cemetery became a resting place for those who died during the Civil War at hospitals located at nearby Silliman Institute and the Masonic Hall in Clinton. The Clinton-Port Hudson Railroad transported wounded from battlefields at Port Hudson and Jackson Crossroads to Clinton where many died of injuries or disease. In 1999, through infrared thermal imaging, the number of soldiers buried in mass graves was determined to exceed 400. (see below) Shaded by large oaks a few hundred yards behind the Marston House, the cemetery contains approximately 345 marked graves of early settlers in East Feliciana Parish. James Holmes (1792-1842) and Susan C. Bostwick (c1800-1839), co-founders of Clinton, are at rest here along with such notables as Daniel W. Crofts, a founder of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity; noted jurist, John McVea; Franklin and Eliza Hardesty, early landowners who provided the land on which the cemetery is located; and Maj. George W. Munday, legislator and officer of the state militia, to name just a few. A memorial service is held in the cemetery each April to recognize and honor those who served during the Civil War although many of the names of the soldiers who lie here are unknown. At various times each year, the renowned "Shades of the Past" cemetery tableau is presented. Conceived in 1985, re-enactors make local history "come alive" as many portray ancestors and all wear authentic attire appropriate to their era.
