GENEALOGY

Church Record Transcriptions

In undertaking the writing of Children of the Danube, as the authour I also became involved in tracing my family tree.  I was welcomed to the wonderful world of genealogy. In the process, as I indicated in my acknowledgments in the book, I enjoyed the mentorship of the late Johann Müller of Bietigheim-Bissingen, a man who was born and raised in my mother’s home village of Bonnya.  He spent his lifetime transcribing the church records written in Gothic Script that he read on microfilm and wrote in a format I could easily assimilate and understand.  As with all things involving human beings he made errors and for that reason I always indicate that individuals making use of his information check them against the microfilms for the purpose of validation.  His transcriptions provide a much more rapid search for those engaged in this work.

He was encouraged by my interest in his work and he made much of his material available to me in various forms. Johann Müller saw his mission in life was to re-unite families and help them keep their heritage and traditions alive. He was especially concerned about those of us who were descendents of the emigrants who left for the United States and Canada and were out of touch with our heritage, history and background.. He gave without charge and whatever I can share with those who are “in search of their family”, is offered in the same way.

The following is a listing of the various church record transcriptions I have in my possession.  Most of the records have their beginnings either in the 1720-1730 period, or following the Edict of Toleration in 1781.  I identify whether the church records are from a Roman Catholic, Lutheran or Reformed parish. I use the term Ev. Lutheran rather than Evangelical because of the current usages of the term and the ambiguities that it creates. As a temporary measure I am listing the transcriptions I currently have for the following communities in the Counties of Tolna, Baranya, Somogy and Veszprem:
