--born
1832 and died in 1874 at 42 years old--
A famous Cuban poet, Ursula was born in an estate
close to Bayamo in 1832, and she died in Santa Isabel de Las
Lajas, Cienfuegos, in 1874. She sometimes used the
pseudonym, La Serrana. She was the sister of José María
Céspedes y Orellano, a "jurisconsulto" and she
collaborated with her great grandmother, Antonia, on her
poetry and in various newspapers in Cuba and Mexico and also
in La Moda Elegante de Cádiz. Her first book,
titled Ecos de las Selvas (Bayamo, 1860), included a foreword
by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes. This was followed by El
Cementerio de La Habana (Habana, 1863), both of which
earned her a great literary reputation.
Her
parents were Don Manuel Céspedes y Barrero and Doña Barbara
Orellano de Céspedes.
