Puppy Tests

The Joel Walton’s Start Puppy Training Procedure (SPTP)

The SPTP is a method for determining the trainability and responsiveness of individual puppies.  As soon as a puppy is old enough to eat kibble, that puppy is old enough for the SPTP.  First, take the puppy to a secure, familiar location away from its mother and littermates.  Place the puppy in front of you, reassure it, pet it, then help it into a standing position.

Next, take a piece of kibble and put it just above the puppy’s nose, so the puppy can see and smell it but can’t quite reach it.  With the kibble, lure the puppy’s head up and just slightly back.  To get it, the puppy will have to sit.  When the puppy sits, give it the treat and lots of praise, “Good puppy!  Good sit!”

Now, take another piece of kibble and put it about an inch in front of the puppy’s nose.  To get the treat, it’ll have to stand.  When it does, give it the treat and lots of praise, “Good puppy!  Good stand!”

This is the basis of lure-and-reward training, something any puppy can learn.  However, some puppies will quickly lose interest and bound away.  Others will stay focused on you and the kibble.  The puppy that loses interest may just not be hungry, but generally the one that responds well to the SPTP for two to three minutes (even practically perfect puppies have relatively short attention spans), is the puppy that will respond well to training by you throughout its life.

Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test

Thanks to Wendy Volhard

The most popular and widely used test is the Volhard.  It is wise to perform he test at approximately 7 weeks of age.  If testing is done earlier the results will be inconclusive since the pup is still immature, if testing is done later between 8-10 weeks of age the pup will be in the fear period thus making assessment of temperament subject to serious misinterpretation.  Conduct the test late in the morning, well after the pups have eaten, during a period when they are lively.  The test takes about 10 minutes.

Interpreting the Scores

The remainder of the puppy test is an evaluation of obedience aptitude and working ability and provides a general picture of a pup's intelligence, spirit, and willingness to work with a human being. For most owners, a good companion dog will score in the 3 to 4 range in this section of the test. Puppies scoring a combination of 1's and 2's require experienced handlers who will be able to draw the best aspects of their potential from them.

Important note from Wendy Volhard...regarding the Touch Sensitivity test - Do not use your fingernail when performing this test. Press between the finger and thumb lightly then more firmly until you get a response.
