History of FCRTA

The Franklin County Retired Teachers Association had an unusual beginning.  Its history was so intertwined with the beginning of ORTA that the two seemed inseparable.  In 1947 there were two organizations of retired teachers in Franklin County.  One was the Retired Schoolmasters Club which consisted entirely of men.  There were fewer than 100 members in the club, and they had little political influence.  The women belonged to the Retired Teachers Club.  This was a larger group with considerably more money in its treasury.

By 1947 the Retired Schoolmasters Club realized the need for increased influence upon the legislature so they approached the Retired Teachers Club to join forces with them and with the Teachers League of Ohio to form a new group.  These three groups became one and elected the first officers of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association (ORTA).

The retired teachers of Columbus and Franklin County looked upon the new organization as their own local group.

However, the rapid growth of ORTA throughout the state soon made them realize that it was no longer meeting their local needs.  So in 1949 the Franklin County retired teachrs met and formed the Franklin County Chapter of ORTA.  This group has grown from 36 charter members to an organization of over 1000 today--about 700 of whom are life members and over 800 belong to both ORTA and FCRTA.

So FCRTA is not a new organization.  Needs have changed over the years but are as crucial now as ever--to protect the retirement benefits of the teachers and to provide other services and activities for its members.
