El Puerto de Santa María & Recommendations

Would you like to sample a variety of restaurants - fish being very popular - and extensive night life? Would you like to see a flamenco show, or join in dancing the traditional "sevillanas?", Do you want to see a bullfight at one of Spain's major bullrings?. Downtown Puerto has its many sites.

Puerto de Santa María, for all the many beaches and upmarket attractions, is also great simply for walks. And only five minutes away begins Puerto Sherry designed for boating sports, with a world-class marina, home of Andalucía's Yachting Federation. The marina, surrounded by a picturesque marine village, sports several outdoor cafés and bars. This complex, well worth seeing, also offers several restaurants ranging from the simplest to five-star.

Puerto has wine cellar tours, as does Jerez - a lovely town, 15 minutes away. The town of Jerez, in addition to Sherry and other wines, is the home of the internationally famous Spanish Riding School.

The Coto de Doñana internationally protected wildlife haven and migration area is about 45 to 60 minutes away. Additionally, driving trips through the old mountain villages ("pueblos blancos" or "the white villages," such as Arcos, Grazalema or Ronda) in the general region provide lovely scenery.

It is worth noting the house is not on the Mediterranean, reportedly polluted in some areas, but rather on the Atlantic Ocean with pollution-free water. All the beaches in the area earn the European Union "blue flag" for meeting stringent environmental standards. The air is also extremely clean with a fairly constant but mild breeze. The clean golden, sand beach is three minutes away and fine for swimming, even for children as the waves are usually small. Just a short walk away lies a more extensive beach, very large with waves sometimes high enough for surfing.
