What is a F.R.E.D. you ask?
FRED is a homebuilt parasol airplane (tail dragger as you can see) designed by Eric Clutton. The name FRED stands for: Flying Runabout Experimental Design
FRED uses wood, steel fittings and fabric for materials. Eric Clutton still flies the original FRED almost daily (weather permitting) and it is 35 years old now and has over 2000 hours on it. The original FRED started it's life with a 1500 cc VW engine, then Eric put a 50 hp Franklin on and now flies with a 65 Continental engine.
The unique thing that many are attracted to about FRED is
that it has folding wings (one
person can fold or unfold wings) and can be towed home to save hanger
rent!

Eric Clutton has written a book about his experiences in building and flying the FRED. It is titled - An Aeroplane Called FRED. I think you will enjoy it. Send Eric $15 US dollars and say you want the book on the Fred. Send to:
Eric Clutton, 913 Cedar Lane, Tullahoma TN.
