2007 OFF-SEASON
NEWS: The next race at Galletta's will be
tentatively the 1st or 2nd Sunday in June (as it has been for
the last 10+ years). As usual, all local go-kart racers are
invited, and will be separated into classes based on engine type
and set-up style. The featured class will be the Galletta's
clockwise stock 5hp class, as usual.
The Galletta's Go-Kart Association intends to race at Oswego
Speedway's dirt track in the 2007 season.
We have already informed several at Oswego
Speedway that we're going to race. Fact is, we race anywhere
under the following conditions:
1. We are allowed our own
100%-stock-part 5hp motor yard kart class (no methanol motors,
no raptor motors, no racing go-karts, and no 5.5hp-&-up or
OHV motors in our class).
2. We are allowed to race clockwise (as our karts are only set
up to race that way - affordable & fast!).
3. We are allowed to do our own points standings and our own
winner's purse.
We said this all during the 2006 season (and
those terms were agreed to on more than one occasion by at least
one track official), but then on race day, we were thrown in
with mixed-class motors (is that dishonest and disrespectful, or
am I imagining things?). We have nothing against the other
drivers, but we want to race in the same motor class. We could
go get 6.5hp motors and put them on tank karts or get methanol
raptor motors and put them on racing karts and race with their
classes too. But that is not the class that we have built and
raced for 15+ years with 10 of our own karts and several friends
with their own. It seems as if such a simple request, one that
is a requirement in all forms of active competitive racing, is
somehow taboo at the Oswego Speedway's dirt track. We hope that
changes next season, as we intend to race there under those
conditions. ___________
It was a great night for Josh Schute,
who has long been a middle-of-the-pack runner who has slowly,
but steadily improved over the last year. But it was his night,
as he not only won the 1st non-winner's race of the 2006
season, but he then held on and survived a late-race accident to
win the regular 40-lapper (that contained several top-gun
feature-winning drivers; Matt, Chris, Ogre, and Rob - who were
all collected in a 2nd-through-4th place pileup). Josh took both
races away from Dick Dann, who led both events until Josh stole
away the lead late when Dick's kart mishandled in the first and
blew a tire late in the second. Josh has been fast in the
Galletta's #7 since last year, and it was great to see him get a
win. A great, fun, competitive night
for all involved. Pictures and updated stats are forthcoming.
Also, the Woodland Go-kart track has opened (click here
for a picture
gallery including a handful of shots from the new track [in addition to
shots of some of us here at Galletta's and Oswego Speedway] are on
Howard Seabrook's Small Engine Racing sitehere).
The track looks nice, but we are trying to figure out what kind
of rules they have, as they seem to be racing counter-clockwise (against their
stagger?), racing on dirt with slicks, and allowing methanol karts to
race with stock 5hps? Or do they run classes? Or just
testing/practicing? And how many people are running out there? If they want us to race
on their track in the future, we race clockwise and only with
stock-part 5hp karts. We'll see about next year, as it is starting to get
too wet and cold this season. The track looks nice though, Great
job. Maybe you could help out our track's turns with that heavy
equipment... Matt does all this track by hand, shovel, and a
roller on a mower, haha!
(PS - Also, Howard & Co., feel free to link to our site as I have
linked to yours. Hopefully we can all get a lot more interest in
new drivers for next season by our combined websites. Thanks!)
Galletta's Go-Kart 2006 #23
(2006/11/26) Final Feature of 2006:
Matt Stevens (#33) won
the final exhibition race of the season, which wound up possibly
being the muddiest race in track history. It included Wesley Ogre (#4), Dick Dann (#86),
Fred Collins, Oscar Berry and Nick Dann (all in Galletta's
rentals). Webmaster and racer Chris, didn't race because he
didn't get enough sleep, the points race is over, and there was
too much mud. But not all shared this opinion, as a mud-covered
Fred Collins yelled, "This is the way I love to race!
WOO!!!!" Oscar (in the Galletta's #6) led a large
portion of the race until Matt snipped him for another win. Matt
made his way to the front three times partially due to the slick
track. Final points standings are listed below.
Matt Stevens (#33) won what may
have been the final exhibition race of the year. I say
exhibition because we have not had a good turnout of late, its
has been very cold, and I didn't do the points. Matt was chased
closely by Wesley Ogre (#4), Chris (in the #2; his #8 broke a
hub), Dick Dann (#86), Oscar Berry (in Matt's #3; the 1st
visitor Matt ever allowed to race his championship kart - and he
did quite well, at one point passing both Wes and Matt off a
restart!), and Nick Dann (#02) rounding out the field with a DNF
(poor Nick). Again, in these late season races, I have not added
up the points, so this means that they are probably just
exhibitions due to a lack of a large attendance, poor track
conditions, and general off-season laziness by yours truly.
PS- Also, congrats to our newest and
most-promising rookie driver, Kyle Reuter,
who is doing a great job for the Oswego State's basketball
team! We look forward to racing with him all next season!
__________
Today was Dick Dann's
day(er, night), as he continued leading the entirety of the
race as he did last week, but this week he held off Chris and
Matt for his 1st career win in his rookie campaign. Dick
proves all of the big-motor whiners wrong, as he wins a feature
with his all-stock 5hp engine while he weighs over 200lbs.! Great to
see all these 1st-time feature winners, as it shows that
everybody is improving! Pictures
and updated
stats forthcoming if Chris has time (but he doesn't).
However, the night was marred by
two young hoodlums who were generally incompetent, seemed
stoned, spun often,
stalled often, wrecked often, broke parts (including severely
bending their own
friend Rob's axle [which is MY frame BTW], Ogre's hub/axle, and
one of the wheels that they were driving), left early on their
own accord, and then the following day,
demanded their money back (even though they busted and bent
several of the above mentioned parts on the karts that add up to
far more than they gave in rental fees, including wasting and gas money idling while they didn't even know how to keep
their karts running let alone race) AND threatened to steal a
go-kart! The Sheriff's Department had to be called on the "punks"
(as called by the deputy; who actually used to play football
with us when we were teenagers), who
refused to leave until they were forced to by the deputy. They are now banned, and from now on we will no
longer be allowing anybody under 18 to race unless their
parent/guardians are there and completely approve and/or race
with them. We've had too many problems with teenagers not having
the physical and mental maturity to handle these karts, so it
stops now. The current minors (16-17yo) who race with us all have this
taken care of, as their parents/guardians have all been here,
approving-of and/or racing-with us, but no more new kids unless
they are over 18. The racing at Galletta's is all for fun
amongst friends and people who genuinely love to race
evenly-matched go-karts,
and we don't need underage kids more concerned about their cell
phones than the actual race, then threatening to steal go-karts
and forcing us to call the cops when they damaged our property
and refused to leave. People causing trouble and ruining the fun
and competitive racing are not invited, and from now on, if
you can't race a go-kart competently, then you won't be
allowed to race.
Update:
At least one of the said hoodlums was arrested recently for
smashing a car's windshield or something along those lines. Wow,
what a shocker! I guess the kid just has problems. These young
whippersnappers these days... their whole lives ahead of them -
girls, school, careers - and all they can do is look for, and
find, trouble.
Galletta's Go-Kart 2006 #17
(2006/09/30) 28-laps
(Rain-shortened event) Kyle leading one of the last laps, challenged by
Chris after a late-race restart. The race was shortened due to
rain making the track too slick, especially for the
inexperienced drivers.
. Here is Chris challenging Kyle for the lead on one
of the final laps of the event. The rain started pouring
heavily, and for the 1st time ever, a Galletta's Go-Kart event
was rain-shortened in progress; just in-time for Kyle, who spun
out on the final lap, saved only by Ogre's spin a spilt second
earlier. Meanwhile, Fast Flyin' Flippin' Freddy did a Dukes of
Hazzard jump over the small inside wall in the back stretch,
landing on his head, then driving right into Kyle's parked #7
kart (who had to be repaired so that he could resume leading the
race - we allowed it because it wasn't his fault; he wasn't even
in the kart!). Kyle then gets his 1st win and becomes the
quickest feature winner at Galletta's, though it was one of the
shortest features in recent years here as well. (Chris's
notes: Sorry for the slow update, as helping my wife pack
for her trip to Thailand for her sister's wedding, and I also
had no idea how to score a 28-lap event - I just made it up now
based on between a 25 and 30 lap points scale.)
Galletta's Go-Kart 2006 #18
(2006/10/07) 75-laps
(Fall Endurance Championship) Flippin' Freddy violently flips while running a
strong 2nd and challenging Matt for the lead. Fred looked faster
than ever, so this wreck hurt what would have likely been his
best run ever!
Here is Chris challenging Matt for the lead on
a late-race restart. Though he had a couple of runs, Matt found
a groove in his new #33 and pulled away for yet another win.
Mattie-Jo again extends his lead and pads his slightly eroded
lead in the total points standings. Meanwhile, several drivers
are dropping like stones in the points as they don't attend the
races anymore... a shame considering that if every accomplished
veteran driver showed up, the racing would be unbelievably
competitive, especially late in the year when passing becomes
more difficult.
(Chris' notes: Sorry for the slow update,
but I was terribly sick with a throat/head/chest cold all last
weekend and 1/2 of the week, a condition worsened by racing in
the cold for this race. Also, *- We need the printed name of the
"new guy" as his signature is an utterly unreadable scribble.)

Now let's have a recap of the 2006 Classic!
The 12th Annual Galletta's
Go-Kart Klassic Championship 150 Recap!
Saturday, September 23rd, 2006 (150-Lap
Event; #16) At first it looked like the weekend was going to rain
out, but the Classic Race was only delayed.
16 drivers made for the biggest "Klassic" ever! First, let us check the
time-trail starting grid:k the
time-trail starting grid:
2006 Driver Profiles:
(Please tell Chris what you want on your profile and
he'll make it, otherwise he won't.)
The start of the race went very slowly as some horrible
crashes from a couple of young drivers and breakdowns by several others
slowed the first third of the race up considerably (and five drivers
even quit due to controversial wrecks and a dispute over rule
enforcement - one pulled because a wrecking rule wasn't enforced and
then four pulled out and left when the wrecking rules were enforced;
enforced at
the request of track owner Mary Stevens who witnessed several of the
wrecks and was concerned for everyone's safety). The lesson is; some
people can't be happy no matter what decision you make, but the two most
important rules are no fighting and no wrecking, and that had to be
enforced. We hope that Ed can come to terms that his sons were both
getting into scary accidents, and also wrecking and endangering not just
themselves, but others (who all directly blamed them; and all spectators
and videotape reviewers concurred), and that leaving just because Chris
was black-flagged was poor sportsmanship. Also, Gary Miller, with his
constant angry tirades is showing poor sportsmanship on a regular basis.
We hope both drivers can keep their tempers down and race in the future.
On this day, it unfortunately marred the beginning of a truly epic
event, and they missed being a part of a fun and exhausting 150-lap
championship race!
But after that, it was the fiercest, fastest-paced,
closest, and most competitive Classic in history! Wesley Ogre Stevens
(#4), Chris Stevens (who hopped into Matt's #3 when his #8 died with
motor problems while leading!), and Matt Stevens (#33) all held the lead
for large portions of the race, and all three of them lost the lead due
to mechanical problems. This left a fast Robbie Jimenez (#5) in the lead
with nobody really able to challenge him, and with his late
grandfather's memory spurring him on. Yet, in taking it too easy too
late in the race, Ogre was able to make the pass, which set up a brutal
leading 4-kart battle back and forth that was a spectacle to watch, with
all in attendance cheering and commenting on the great finish. In the
above two photos show this battle, where the lead shuffled considerably
in the latter half in the race, with Ogre, Rob, Matt and Chris in a
4-kart train. Then, a scoring problem caused a premature caution on lap
140, and set the stage for a memorable final 10-lap shootout. With Ogre
leading, Robbie attempted to pass him and fell off the track which
enabled Matt Stevens and his brother Chris to move past him. Then, with
Matt going for the win, and nearly getting the pass, lost ground as Ogre
held him off and Chris and Rob were able to execute a pass on him as
well.
The final result after 150 laps? Well, in a surprise
upset...
OGRE WINS! OGRE WINS! OGRE WINS!
579 year-old Wesley James TrOgre Stevens becomes the third winner in the
twelve year history of the event, yet it is still a family affair, as he
interrupts his two boys' domination of the event and wins, yet holds the
streak of only the home team winning.
The final finishing order of this the largest and most competitive

to update with more pictures, commentary, and possibly driver/kart
profiles. Meanwhile, the newest updated points standings. With a new
points system in place for the 150 lap event (with three times the
points of a 50-lap event, additional points for time-trial placement and
bonus points for laps-lad (1st, 2nd, and 3rd), the competitors who
attended scored massive points increases. Let us check them next...
2006
Galletta's Go-Karts Final Summer Point Standings
After 16 feature events from 6/11/2006 thru 9/23/2006:
POINTS SCORING SYSTEM IS IN RULES
SECTION! Each heat and feature is started in a handicap order,
reversed from points-per-event (low-to-high). Inexperienced drivers
with less than 10 races and wreck-prone drivers start in the back
regardless of points. Points are scored based on finishing positions
in heats and features (with bonus points for each feature lap in the top
3 spots).
(A ^ in wins means Classic win this year. A * in win category means a shared tie, a
* in name category means
track championships.)

10-lap race is heat. All others are "Feature Events".
Kart Classic is 130-laps (as of 2005).
In Feature events, bonus points are awarded as follows:
1st place = 1.0 point every lap
2nd place = 0.5 point every lap
3rd place = 0.5 point every lap
(3rd place is only awarded bonus points with 11 or
more karts.)
Classic has never had awarded points for laps led (may change).
