Stop 'Cat By Law' (A-300)
Cat By Law A-300 was narrowly passed in October 2007 largely due to the efforts of councillors David Hendsbee, Mary Wile, Linda Mosher, Krista Snow, Jim Smith, Bill Karsten and Andrew Younger's work. It has been heavily critcized as inhumane, expensive and unenforcable. Local and national media attention has drawn attention to the large public outcry against it, poor planning that went into it and absurd priorites of Council as we became a national joke.
This being an election year (Oct2008), most candidates who fought for the by-law regardless of it's spiralling costs and public opposition decided it would be best to oppose it in order to get re-elected. Let's not give them a chance to reverse the great progress that occurred this May 2008 when the cat by-law was gutted and voted down 19-2 in council (David hendsbee and Mary Wile still support the extinction of cats and raising of property taxes !). The councillors who suddenly 'say the light' months before we go to the election are Linda Mosher, Jim Smith, Andrew Younger, Krista Snow and the truly insane David Hendsbess & Mary Wile. If you are tired of property taxes going through the roof these 6 councillors have to go in the October 2008 election.

NEWS ALERTS:
1] May28,2008. FINALLY - WE HAVE WON ! The cat by law was gutted with a 19-2 vote to remove cats from the by-law. After supporting the by-law for nearly a year many councillors are now trying to save their own job with the October 2008 election looming and now suddenly claim to be opposed to the law they created and supported. A shallow re-election bid, let's give them the re-election vote the deserve - for their opponents !
2] May 7,2008. Great news, Tim Outhit has won the Bedofrd by-election, he has stated his opposition to the by-law and said he will not support it. He also believes HRM should be addressing many more important issues.
3] March 18th,2008 Halifax Council reviewed the by-law once again and decided to hold yet another public review. There's 2 things we can do now, voice your opinion at the public review and voice your opinion to your councillor (especially during the October 2008 election).
4] Mar19,2008 Chronicle Herald. Councillors Mary Wile and Bill Karsten adamently supported the by-law once again during a review of the by-law despite it's hefty pricetag and large opposition. "Let’s get on with it; let’s get rid of it...and get down to real business," Councillor Gloria McCluskey was quoted as saying. There are some councillors fighting this by-law, drop them a line and thank them !
