So as you attempt to train your dog basic behavior, begin with the most basic command: sit. As you train your dog basic behavior, begin by getting a treat that the dog likes and holding it above the dog; train your dog basic behavior with this procedure and you will see it works every time, because the dog looks at you, and naturally lowers his rear end. Tell the dog that he is a very, very good pup, and allow him to have the treat. Of course, you would have been saying "sit" repeatedly. Another tenet you'll find as you train your dog basic behavior is the command for "down." To train your dog basic behavior with this trick, you can again use a treat that you hold low to the ground while repeating the word "down." As you lower the treat to the floor level, the dog will lower himself. When the dog does as you say, give him the treat and again tell him what a great dog he is. Repeat this train your dog basic behavior practice over and over until the dog masters the command of down.

Another thing to try as you train your dog basic behavior is teaching the dog to "come." This will be really helpful if your dog has a tendency to run off. Train your dog basic behavior with this and find it is the best one you teach your dog. To entice the dog to follow this command, you should probably enlist another family member to help out. If one person holds a treat for the pup and shows it to the dog, but holds it out of reach, and the other person holds the dog, then when you start saying "come" to the dog, and the other person releases the dog, the dog will be excited to run after you. You can keep on repeating this as you train your dog basic behavior and when the dog does come to you, reward him with play or treats.

To teach the dog to "wait" or "stay," you will have to tell the dog the command and then back away from the dog. Do not praise the dog unless he is still waiting, because otherwise, if you praise him after he gets up, he will associate the reward with not staying or waiting. This actually applies to all aspects you'll try as you train your dog basic behavior, since dogs learn while they are doing something, not after the fact.
