"Caring Kids"
As we seek
to improve standards in our schools, it is important to create
a safe, caring, and supportive environment where children can
learn and grow. "Caring Kids" is a year-opening project
that will help to establish this atmosphere. In this unit, students
will explore the dynamic personalities of fictional and historical
characters. They will then extend this knowledge as they evaluate
their own character traits for strengths and areas they perceive
as weaknesses. Through conflict mediation techniques, students
will analyze the role of positive traits in resolving differences.
Finally, students will share the "Caring Kids" themes
with other members of the school community. This unit will empower
students with skills to assume responsibility for establishing
and maintaining a healthy school climate.

"If
we want our children to possess the traits of character we most
admire, we need to teach them what those traits are and why they
deserve both admiration and allegiance. Children must learn to identify
the forms and content of those traits."

J. Bennett, former U.S. Secretary of Education, author
