If you live your life with a certain "joie de vie" that places a premium on enjoying the present through your senses while treating others beautifully and creatively, then you qualify as a "Cajun," period. The elitists will argue that you must be descended from folks who once lived in Acadia (now Nova Scotia) in northeast Canada, prior to 1755.
All this elitist stuff about who "qualifies" to be a Cajun is hooey. It's really a matter of point of view and disposition.

The Cajun University, The University of Louisiana, in Lafayette, has a Center for Louisiana Studies headed up by Carl Brasseaux.
