Who are we?

The JHEA is a local support group for homeschooling families in and around Juneau, Alaska. This group has been a source of encouragement for Juneau homeschoolers for around 18 years. We meet monthly, except during the summer. We will be meeting on the second Monday of each month, usually in the Mendenhall Valley Library, always at 7:00 p.m. If for some reason we cannot meet on the second Monday, our backup plan is to meet on the first or third Monday.

The minutes of our January, 2006 meeting are here We have met several times since then, most recently in May 2006, but we've let posting the minutes slip past us. All the more reason to show up, I guess. That's a photo of our October 2005 meeting at the left.

Our Next Meeting will be will be Monday evening, the 18th of September, in the usual place and time.

Politics

Election year is upon us again. Whatever your political preferences, remember to check the candidates' stands on public and home schooling. Tell candidates how their stand influenced your vote. We can't expect them to read our minds, we have to tell them what we want, especially when all we want is to be left alone. There's nothing that scares a politician like a big voter turnout.

If you find a candidate that you are enthusiastic about, volunteer to help with his campaign, and, again, tell him why. Every candidate that the Alaska Home Educators Association has surveyed has said that they would welcome campaign help from homeschool families. If you would like to volunteer with a campaign, but aren't sure where to begin, email your webmaster at for help in connecting with the campaign of your choice.

How do I join JHEA?

Just show up at a meeting, or get on our mailing list, or contact the webmaster.

New!Some of our upcoming field trips for 2006:

In 2006, one of our first field trips was to the South East Museum of Natural History. The museum is a private display, open only to school groups, by appointment only, so this was a rare opportunity for the kids to see stuffed animals from South East Alaska and around the world, and learn a bit about their habits and habitats. To get advanced notice of these field trips, please get on the JHEA mailing list!

On the 23rd of December, some of us went Christmas caroling in the Mendenhaven area. We knocked on a number of doors and sang some old, favorite carols. I think that we were a blessing to many of the people we sang to, and we had a good time doing it.

Our first field trip of 2004 (thanks to Mona Bibb, who worked hard to make it happen) was to the wastewater treatment plant. Roughly two dozen families went on one of four tours (told you that Mona was busy). The photo shows a portion of one of the tours in the lab, learning about the testing procedures.

Coming up this fall

Every year, some of our members arrange field trips here in the community for the families. In past years, we had:

Some of the suggestions we've heard for future field trips were:

If you have an idea for a field trip, contact the organization we'd be visiting, make arrangements, and send me an email so I can get the word out.

Contacting us:
