Based on the ideas of
The WebQuest Page
Volcano!  Earthquake!  Avalanche!
Would you know how to survive a disaster?  Choices made in the first minutes, or even seconds, following could mean the difference between life or death!  Your team has been hired to help get the word out about what to do in a disaster.  Your information and the way you present it could help people know what to do when disaster strikes.
Task

Your team is made up of a geologist, a public safety advisor, a journalist, and a disaster survivor.  Your team's task is to make a public service announcement letting people know how they can survive a disaster.  Each team member will need to bring in his or her own expert knowledge to accomplish the task.  You can choose from different ways to present  this information, but keep in mind that you'll need to come up with some way to really get the public's (that is, your classmates') attention and persuade them to do what you recommend.   What would get your attention?  Humor?  Costumes? Props?  Click here for some other ideas that people use in ads. You need to get the facts out, but if no one understands or pays attention then you've missed the point!!!  One last thing:  DON'T FORGET TO PRACTICE, PRACTICE, AND PRACTICE SOME MORE!

Procedure

1.  Each team will randomly select a disaster to cover (earthquake, volcano, avalanche/landslide, flood, or tsunami).  Groups may trade the first day only.

2.  As a team you can decide who will do each job.  The choices are:
Geologist, Public Safety Advisor, Journalist, or Disaster Survivor.  Click on the name of your job to see your page with links and focus questions for your report.  You should write down your questions and take notes as you research.

3.  Individually, you will each research your roles and write up a one to two page report with your findings.  Rough drafts/notes are due this Friday.  Final drafts are due next Wednesday.

4.  As a group, you will decide together a way to present your public service announcement.  You may choose to present a talk show or an informational commercial.  Videos are welcome but only if they are in an easy to show format.  That means that it is on a regular VHS tape or that you can bring in the video camera to play it (and know how to connect it to the TV).  Each team must present within the next month.  See Mrs. Bibayoff to sign up on the calendar (only one team per period per school day).

Evaluation

You will be graded on your individual report, in class participation (including your rough draft), and your part of the team presentation.  Please see the grading rubric for more details on how you will be earning points.

Conclusion

By the end of this WebQuest it is hoped that you will know more about what causes these natural disasters to happen and how someone can survive in a disaster.  Also, you will have learned how to get people's attention and persuade them to listen to your information.  You should be able to use this information to spread the word about how to survive a natural disaster.
