Project Reach Out
Teachers Reaching Out
to Help Hurricane Victims

Project Reach Out is a grass-roots effort of the Second Grade Mailring at Teachers.Net to allow educators to help other educators and students who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina. The needs of those affected are overwhelming, but the focus of this project is to assist educators in connecting with teachers, classrooms, or schools/districts who can use help (and hope), especially in terms of supplies, in dealing with this national disaster.

This page will be updated as new information is received.

Reaching Out to Individuals
Are you are a teacher who has been affected by Hurricane Katrina, and would like to receive help?
You may be:
1. A teacher personally affected by Hurricane Katrina, OR
2. A teacher who knows of a teacher in need, OR
3. A teacher in a receiving school of evacuees who will be affected by a larger student population.

If you would like to have a colleague or colleagues contact you, please send your name, grade, school name and address, and your email address here. I will post your information and when a match or matches has been found, it will be indicated.

Reaching Out to Classrooms
Jennifer Wagner of technospud.com is organizing an "Adopt a Class" project. If you would like to like to sign up your class to be a part of this great project, please see her page for details.

Reaching Out to Schools/Districts
Although most schools in affected areas are destroyed or not functioning, there are a number of schools/districts who may be functioning soon OR who are taking in affected students.

If you know of a school that would like support, please send me the school name and address, and a contact person with email address at that school here. I will add that information to the following list:
  • Houston Seeks Help
Houston Schools are taking in large numbers of students. The Houston Independent School District has a very organized list of ways that teachers, classes, or schools can help. You may also contribute money to HISD for the purchase of school supplies and uniforms. Checks for this purpose should be made out to HISD Louisiana Evacuee Assistance and mailed or brought to:
    HISD's Office of Strategic Partnerships
    3830 Richmond Avenue
    Houston, TX 77027-5838
  • American Federation of Teachers
The AFT is seeking donations to the AFT Disaster Relief Fund and is working with local and state leaders to direct those funds to fill the immediate needs of members. Contributions should be made payable to the AFT with "disaster relief" written in the memo portion of the check and sent to:
    AFT Disaster Relief Fund
    Attn: Connie Cordovilla
    555 New Jersey Ave. N.W.
    Washington, DC 20001
  • National Teachers Association
The NEA is also setting up a relief fund for members. The focus of this fund is on basic needs. Make checks payable to NEA's HIN Hurricane Relief Fund, and send your tax-deductible contributions to:
    NEA HIN/Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund
    1201 16th Street NW
    Suite 216
    Washington, DC 20036
To learn more, and to find resources to help your own students cope with this disaster, click here.
  • East Baton Rouge Parish Schools
East Baton Rouge Schools have now taken in children from both Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. They are articulating specific needs, along with monetary donations on their wishlist. Learn more at their website.
