Hurricane Katrina's
Living
Jane Does and John Does
From time to time I see an article about an unidentified Katrina
evacuee who can't tell anyone her name or where she came from. Each
article quickly disappears into the chaos of the Internet. The purpose
of this page is to keep the stories of these unidentified, living
people in the public eye until they are reunited with their families.
143 days have passed since
Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005.
Jacqueline Manuel
Jacqueline Manuel is African-American, 65 years old, with greying
black hair. She has cerebral palsy, requires a wheelchair, and has a
severe speech impairment. She was airlifted from the Interstate 10
bridge near Paris Avenue in New Orleans on Sept. 3. Ms. Manuel is 5'5"
tall and weighs about 170 pounds. She wears dentures and has diabetes.
Please contact her niece, Dana Clark, at 504-250-5696 or 706-215-2494
or at destinyseyes000@aol.com. Ethel Herbert
Ethel Herbert, 82, was bedridden prior to the hurricane. Family members
cared for her in her New Orleans apartment during the storm and the
first day of the flooding. The family thinks she suffered a stroke
during that time. She was unable to speak when she was evacuated by
helicopter from I-10 near the Superdome on August 31.
Ms. Herbert is African-American with grey hair and brown eyes.
She is
5'2" tall, and weighs 140 pounds. She has pierced ears and a scar on
her forehead. She has diabetes, and is missing all her teeth. She was
wearing a nightgown and robe and gold earrings when last seen.

The Alzheimer's
Association is extending special services to patients
affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
They are interested in hearing about anyone who has dementia
and is
missing because of the hurricanes. The patient does not have to be
diagnosed with Alzheimer's. The Association is extending its "Safe
Return" services to the Katrina and Rita dementia patients and their
families. This means they will help search for the missing person, and
they will supply patients from Louisiana and Mississippi with "Safe
Return" registrations and ID bracelets or necklaces free of charge.
Their toll free numbers operate 24 hours a day. Call
1-800-272-3900 for
information and general support. That number is also picking up all the
calls to local Alzheimer's Association offices in Louisiana,
Mississippi, and part of Texas. For emergencies or to talk to people
who participate in the searches, call 1-800-572-1122.
