Beginning HM 64

Congratulations on borrowing Harvest Moon 64 from a friend (They won’t ever be seeing the game cartridge again and everyone knows it) or buying your very own copy. If you want to have a normal life for at least the next few weeks, please do not play this game. Otherwise, choose a free game save and start playing!

After choosing your farmer’s name (If you are a girl and have a girl’s name, you might want to select a guy’s name as the farmer is male [we think]), your birthday season (your birthday will always be on the 25th), your farm’s name, and your dog’s name, you will see your character eating at a table. We don’t know what he’s eating. Once you go outside, a very, uh, unusually dressed man will greet you. Despite his appearance, he is the town mayor. If you really want to get a feel for where things are, accept the tour that he offers. If you would rather piss him off (always fun) and have about half an hour Harvest Moon time to work, reject his offer.

Tools

As you may have already discovered, the start button not only pauses the game but brings up an item subscreen. The tools (in the first grouping of boxes) can be equipped to the B button. and items (in the second grouping of boxes) can be equipped to the A button. Items in the third grouping of boxes which extends vertically along side the other two box groupings, are items which cannot be equipped or given to people unless the person notices that you are carrying the item (i.e. All girls will notice the music box once it is in good condition, but you may choose which girl receives the music box). The clock in the upper right hand corner will inform you of the current time in the game, not in real life.

The tools you will need for
clearing the land on your farm are the hatchet (axe) and hammer (the thing you hit things with). All of the tools you begin with can be upgraded with the amount of work you do. The hatchet can be used every day to chop wood in the forest (see Harvest). Your sickle can be used to cut grass and vegetables, so be careful around your crops! Unless you want poor quality or sick animals, do not use the hammer, hatchet, hoe or sickle around your livestock. Towns people have rather slow nerves and will not feel the impact of your tools/weapons of mass destruction. Also keep in mind that tool use uses energy. A lot of tool use on a rainy or snowy day will cause you to be sick and miss a day that could be used for work (or play).

Clearing the Land
Unless you are really psyched up about getting a level three sickle (curved blade thingy) and playing “Grim Reaper” with your chickens, retire the sickle until you have some grass growing. Use your hands (A button) to pull up weeds and if you so desire, throwing stones into your well. For stones and boulders, use your hammer. Boulders will take six hits to crumble if you have the lowest level hammer. Once your hammer becomes silver, it will only take three strikes to detroy a boulder, but you must hold the B button for longer. A hatchet is the only tool that will chop wood. A regular hatchet also requires six hits to chop a stump, a silver hatchet three hits, and a golden hatchet one hit. Weeds grow everyday, so you will never see the end of them in spring, summer, and autumn. People do not like weeds as presents. The mayor will be pissed off if you give him a weed (always fun).

Planting Crops

After clearing the land, the smartest thing to do is plant a few crops. If you have already spent the 300g you are given at the beginning of the game on liquor or cake, I understand completely. You will have to work to get enough gold for turnips seeds, however. To make a tidy profit, venture into the forest everyday and gather the fruit (top C to put items in your pack, bottom C to eat food items), bring the fruit back to your farm, and ship it in the shipping bin (the box thing in front of your house to the right of your dog house), and check your money supply at five o’clock (game time). Turnip seeds cost 200g and can be purchased at the flower shop in town (see
Town Life). Turnips are the best crop to start out with because they will be fully mature in five days.

To plant seeds, you must have tilled soil. To till soil, take out your hoe and stand on the dirt at your farm. To harvest all possible seeds, you will want to make a three by three plot like so:

Stand in the very center square, equip the seeds, and press B. Use the water can to water the seeds every day until they are vegetables. The water can may be filled in the north eastern corner of your farm. When vegetables are in the process of growing, you wil not be able to water the middle square. After the veggies are harvested, you will be able to water and harvest the middle one.

Town Life

If you are anything like a certain Harvest Moon adict, the first place you will visit in town is the bar. That’s not a bad thing, but just so you know, the town is a fairly large place. The first place you will want to visit for farming purposes is the flower shop. The florist, also the woman behind the counter, is Lillia. Her daughter is Popuri, one of five lovely ladies that you may flirt with. Yes, flirting is allowed with the, er, older women, but not encouraged. If you are like another Harvest Moon adict, you may believe that the girl’s mothers would make better spouses than the girls themselves. That’s fine too, just remember that most are already married and the midwife isn’t interested. If you are religious in real life, you may enjoy attending church on Sundays. After having played the game for a few years, bringing lunch to the poor children stuck in school their during weekdays might bring you pleasure. Beyond the church is the bar, which you will become well aquainted with. Below the bar are two shops. The one on the left is Rick’s tool shop. Rick just so happen to be kin of a lovely young red-head rancher. To the right of the tool shop is a crafts store. Across the street is the bakery, where you will find another of the five girls as well as pastries galore. You can buy cakes across the counter or sit down to a table to eat.

If you venture into the other side of town, you will discover the Flower Bud Village Public Library and a very shy number three to the five girls. Maria, the librarian and the object of your adoration, is the daughter of the mayor (The mayor’s wife had an affair and you know it!), and the organ player at the church. Below the library is the mayor’s residence. To the right of the library is a small shanty that houses the midwife and her granddaughter. The midwife should become your close friend, as she will do the honors when your child comes. To the right of the midwife’s home is the potion shop. The potion maker, his grandchildren, and Tauro, a mate for your pooch, live there.

In the coming seasons and years you will develope friends, and even enemies, among your neighbors. Every girl in Harvest Moon 64 has a destined mate, but only until you come along. There may be hard feelings between you and the guy you are competing with, but it’s all part of the game play. You will be making close friends according to your goals; Those who are interested in Popuri will most likely want to befriend her parents. If you are a fan of fishing, you and the fisherman may become inseperable.
