Fishing, Mining, and Scavenging

The Harvest Moon life isn’t all girls, cows, and crops. Fishing, mining, and scavenging the land should be sizeable portions of the farmer guy’s year. There are appropriate times to do each of the acitivities, listed here.

....Fishing....Mining....Scavenging....

Fishing

—The only body of water that is unfishable is the somewhat sacred stream and pond in the third forest area. At the beach, you can fish off of the dock, but not off of the beach itself. In the first forest area, you can fish in the pound and from the side of the river. In the second forest area (with the carpeters’ hut and the cave), you can fish off the side of the river. In winter, the pond in the first forest area is frozen over, though all of the other areas remain fishable.

To get the fishing rod, talk to the fisherman by the tent next to the pond in the first forest scene. No matter what you say, he will give you the rod. To fish, equip the rod and stand next to one of the bodies of water mentioned above. Press and hold B, releasing B when you are finished, or when there is a tug at the line. If you release B in time with the fishes tug, you will receive a fish of large, medium, or small size. You can sell fish for profit, the larger the fish, the larger the profit.

Fish are best caught in the early morning. If you have absolutely nothing to do in the morning, fishing would be a good idea. It’s a relaxing activity for the farmer guy, and you can make a tidy profit, at the very least, dog food.

Mining

Mining begins on the 8th of Winter and continues through the 30th of Winter. Take your hoe to the cave in the second forest area (the area with the carpenter’s hut) to the back of the cave. There you will find one of the carpenters standing in front of a door. When you talk to him, agree to entering the mine. Use your hoe to dig up buried minerals and treasure in the mine. It will not help you to hit a place multiple times, as it does not dig deeper. You can sell almost everything you find. Other objects must be given to certain characters for various reasons. If you dig up a hole to another level, you have the choice of following the hole. The deeper the level, the more profit can be made from selling the items you find. You are released from the mine when you have no energy or at 5pm.
