Arts & Culture Week

A Portuguese Cultural Experience

Monday, April 25 to Sunday, May 1, 2005.

Come experience April in Portugal right here in your own back yard. From Portuguese cuisine to the luring rhythm of colourfully costumed Folk Dancers, the week will be full of activities that celebrate the rich culture and traditions of the Portuguese people.

Beginning on Monday, April 25 the Osoyoos Art Gallery will open its doors to feature a weeklong display of Portuguese pottery, embroidery, costumes, woodcarving and wrought iron pieces by local Portuguese Artisans.

On Tuesday, April 26 you will have the opportunity to tour Sun Fresh Co-op and then relax among the orchard blossoms as you savour a traditional Portuguese luncheon.

Wednesday, April 27, Francis from Osoyoos Home Hardware invites you to participate in cooking demonstrations and enjoy some Portuguese dishes from the regions of Mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores.

Children at the Osoyoos Elementary School will be entertained with the Folklore Legend of the famous Portuguese Rooster, as well as participate in a colouring contest of the National Symbol. At the Osoyoos Secondary Schools students will have the opportunity to participate in a number of traditional games and artistic endeavors.

Come and take a nostalgic glimpse into the past on Friday, April 29, at the Osoyoos Mini Theatre, as we present the documentary film, "Portuguese In the Okanagan" and "Discovering Portugal".

Bring the whole family to a Portuguese Dinner and Dance, On Saturday, April 30 at the Sonora Centre. There will be a special performance by the South Okanagan Folk Dancers and Drummers, a silent auction and enough music to listen or dance the night away.

To wrap this week up, the Portuguese Club will host an Open House on Sunday, May 1.

Come and enjoy a soccer game, freshly barbequed sardines, bifanas and much, much more. As this year commemorates 50 years since the first Portuguese immigrated to the Okanagan, a concept drawing of a Commemorative Structure will be unveil at the Club. This piece will be dedicated to the Portuguese families for their significant cultural and economic contribution.
