Austrian coinage after WW II by Jürgen Niedermaier
The following article is written to give a short overview over the Austrian coins which were minted after 1945. For more detailed information, please don´t hesitate to ask me!
After WW II had ended, Austria started to mint coins in 1946. The first series of coins contained 50 Groschen, 1 Schilling and 2 Schilling, all in aluminium. All of them show the Austrian eagle, 1 schilling also shows a man who brings out the seeds on his field (symbol for agriculture). For the same reason, 2
In 1959 the 10 Groschen (zinc) were replaced by aluminium coins which are still current. The same happened to the coins of 50 Groschen and 1 Schilling.
Austria issued their first silver circulation coins after WW II in 1957 (10 Schilling) and 1960 (5 Schilling). On 5 Schilling you can see a "Lipizzaner", a famous Austrian horse, and on 10 Schilling, there is a woman with traditional hat from the "Wachau"
Austrian current coins were minted until 1998 for circulation, in 1999 and 2000 they are only available in mint sets. That is because now Vienna mint is already busy with producing the new Euro-coins which will be released for circulation in 2002. To be continued... |
