MARCH 10, 2003 "Metallica named MTV icon"
"MTV's annual music tribute event, mtvICON, will spotlight the 20-year career of Metallica. The inaugural mtvICON paid tribute to Janet Jackson in 2001, followed by honorees Aerosmith in 2002. James, Lars, and Kirk were there in 2002 to show their appreciation of the group and to give testimonials on what Aerosmith has meant to them as a band and as people. mtvICON: Metallica will tape before a live audience in Los Angeles on May 3rd, and will premiere on MTV on May 6th from 9:00-10:30pm ET/PT. The special program will feature performances and testimonials from artists and celebrities who have been influenced by the band, their music, and their videos. For the finale, Metallica will take the stage for a show-stopping set, marking the band's debut television performance with their new bass player Rob Trujillo. A full list of talent will be announced shortly. "A NEW BASSIST HAS ARRIVED" After much searching and trying out new bassists, the once threesome of lars, james and kirk, found a new member, Robert Trujillo, former bassist of Suicidal Tendencies, Black Label Society and Ozzy Ozbournes band. We got to know Rob when we played together with Suicidal in Europe 1993, during the 'Nowhere Else To Roam' tour. We were impressed by Rob's roaring bass style and his very cool, unique vibe onstage, things we got to see again during the '94' "Summer Shit" tour when Suicidal Tendencies joined with us on tour. When Rob came to San Francisco the first time and jammed with us, we all felt this incredible magic between the four of us. It was just something that we could not describe, we all just knew it. We're fuckin' bristling with new energy, new respect, new vibes and a huge fucking appetite for everything Metallica is. Having Rob here, and him choosing to become a part of our family, will enable us to get to yet another level. So welcome Rob!
