Drama it is. Nothing else. By giving up the post of MP and chair person of NAC, what has Ms Sonia Gandhi lost? Nothing. Next budget will still be briefed to her before presenting in the parliament. Not one major amendment will be tabled without her consent. Yes, now she is also excused form attending the Parliament sessions.
I strongly feel that the speaker must not accept her resignation. Since the matter is in the process of being referred to EC, status quo must be maintained. If the EC feels that Ms Gandhi is indeed guilty of holding the proverbial "Office-of-Profit" then she must be disqualified dishonorably like Jaya Bacchan. If not, the whole matter must rest in peace.
Drawing a parallel in the world of blue collar crimes, just because a thief had a 'change of heart' and surrendered at the local police station with all the loot, is he spared? No. He is charge sheeted (with 10 other crimes. But that is another story) and then has to spend the mandatory time in jail. Why should white collar crimes like the ones committed by those resigned MPs (like Ms. Sonia Gandhi) be excused? They deserve to be dishonorably relieved of their duty irrespective whether they resign or not. Each one of them - across all the parties.
More Drama. I now hear that 25 congress MLAs from MP resigned to show solidarity with their leader. This only highlights the level of sycophancy that exists in the oldest political party of India. Shame on them. Like Ms Gandhi, all these 25 MLAs were again not in power. They lose nothing by resigning. They only gain 3.5 years of vacation. Resignation from assembly or the Parliament should disqualify that political party from contesting that seat again in that tenure of the house. That will bring an end to people taking political mileage by staging resignations.
