Description:
The Gate Theatre focuses on actors rather than the other parts of theatrical productions. The Gate has been around since 1979 and has illustrious history. Former artistic directors include the founder Lou Stein, Stephen Daldry, Giles Croft, David Farr and Mick Gordon (who in addition to their success at the Gate have gone on to do excellent work elsewhere including the National Theatre)
Sets are usually minimal, the theatre has flexible seating. Basically it is a black box space with a variety of seating and platforms for the playing space. Lighting is also generally quite minimal.
The Gate is very separate from the Prince Albert Pub below and there doesn't seem to be as much integration between the pub and theatre as might be expected. The theatre has its own separate entrance (up a flight of steps next to the pub) and it is possible to go to the theatre without ever setting foot in the pub. It is also possible to miss the show while sitting in the pub as they don't generally warn people when the curtain is going up.
