Individuals Listed in Briggs Report

The following document reproduces individuals listed in HOUSE NO. 26, OF 1849, REPORT OF THE COMMISSIONERS RELATING TO THE CONDITION OF THE INDIANS IN MASSACHUSETTS

This report was prepared by F. W. Bird, Whiting Griswold & Cyrus Weekes and was submitted to George N. Briggs, Governor of Massachusetts in 1849. The background on Briggs and this document is discussed here in a separate writing. What’s reproduced here is an "as is" listing of Indian families and individuals. In the order in which the names appear in the Briggs Report are reproduced first name, last name, age, gender, and tribal group. While the document does not provide information on households or heads of households, in numerous instances household or family relationships are suggested by the order of listings. No substantial effort has been made to edit or correct the Briggs information; except in examples with typographical errors would impede identification, names are as they appear. In seeking specific persons, a complete alphabetical report of all individuals listed in the Briggs document can be consulted. If searching for specific individuals, the significantly larger alphabetical listing of the Earle Report of 1861 enumerates Massachusetts Indians 12 years later. Individuals listed in the Earle Report arranged by tribal groups can also be consulted.
