In the fall of 1999, the Saginaw River Marine Historical Society (SRMHS) made an agreement with the owner of the Saginaw River Rear Range Lighthouse, The Dow Chemical Company, to preserve the structure. The lighthouse and surrounding land are private property and are currently only open to Saginaw River Marine Historical Society members during scheduled work sessions.
A new roof was installed on the lighthouse in the spring of 2000. In more recent years, some of the plaster walls, and ceilings of the structure were damaged due to moisture. It was decided to remove the plaster and lath from the interior of all 3 levels of the lighthouse. Several layers of flooring, added over the years to the 1st and 2nd story, were removed as well. The cellar has a concrete floor, and apparently has never had anything covering it. Plans call for the building to be well insulated, and drywall will used to cover the now exposed interior brick walls. This environment will provide ideal conditions for historical artifacts to be displayed in the maritime museum the SRMHS plans to have inside the lighthouse. The museum will have rotating exhibits related to the history of the lighthouse, and the Saginaw River. The SRMHS also plans to have a maritime research center in the structure. Members of the Saginaw River Marine Historical Society very much look forward to when the lighthouse will be open for the public, so they can enjoy this historic "aid to navigation," and former U.S. Coast Guard station.
The Saginaw River Marine Historical Society normally meets at 7:00 PM on the third Saturday of the month (September through April except December) and are usually held at Trinity Episcopal Church, Center Avenue and Grant Street on Bay City, Michigan's east side. All meetings are open to the public and are free of charge. For information about programs and any schedule changes, please see the SRMHS Events/Programs Schedule Web page.
