Her drawings and paintings always tell a story of the life she enjoys with her family and friends. Shirley often finds herself adding a little humor in her originals, especially in titles chosen for her many cow paintings.
This artist uses a variety of artistic tools, often mixing media for special effects through experimentation often resulting in unusual collages. Currently she is working with acrylics on canvas.
Shirley's art works range in size from miniatures to large murals and she is fast becoming well known in the midwest for her paintings of cattle and the flinthills.
Although Akers has been drawing and painting seriously for over three decades, she believes she will always be a student of art and of life.
Akers has received several awards for her strong compositions and is an active member of numerous art guilds and organizations.
Mrs. Akers also strives to help encourage the arts in the her local community with persons of varying ages, abilities and dementia. She is an adjunct art instructor for a community college in Kansas. "In my opinion it is not the lack of an ability to draw that hinders one from creating art, but rather, the inability to see. And we do not only see with our eyes."
