THE PUZZLE

Truth be told, the Sennen Puzzle is simply a little golden upside-down pyramid that is worn as a necklace. But it’s also a puzzle that has been in existence for at least 3000 years. Found in the tomb of a pharaoh, it was passed down to a teenager named Yuugi, who managed to solve it, unlike so many before him. Inside the puzzle itself is “another Yuugi”, Mou Hitori no Yuugi (aka. Pharaoh Atemu, spirit of the Sennen Puzzle, game king, etc.) who possesses Yuugi when things get dangerous, or he’s playing some sort of game that requires Mou Hitori no Yuugi’s advice to win. (Or if someone tries to intimidate Yuugi, Mou Hitori no Yuugi will appear and stand his ground...) This spirit that resides in the puzzle has no idea who he is, but later finds out that he is a pharaoh. In the Memory World arc of the series, the origin of the Sennen Items is revealed – Mou Hitori no Yuugi’s father ordered them to be created, but Priest Akenhaden kept the price of the 99 lives needed to make them a secret from him. The purpose of the Items was to punish wrongdoers and keep a sense of justice and order over the land. The Puzzle itself is a symbol of kingship, as it was passed down from one pharaoh to the next in the past, so it seems fitting that Yuugi/MHnY would wear such an item, being dubbed a ‘game king’. Anyway, it makes a damn good fashion accessory. To think Yuugi pretty much got something so valuable for free – it's no wonder everyone tries to steal it!

IN THE DUB

In the English anime, "Sennen Puzzle" translates as "Millennium Puzzle". Also, for reasons unknown, the Pharaoh's age is changed from about 3000 years to about 5000 years. The spirit of the puzzle is called "Yami" by those who realise the difference between him and Yuugi. Later when Yuugi's soul is taken and the spirit is left in control of his body, he is reffered to as "Pharaoh", both as an honorific and acknowledgement of his true self.
